Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., has had a penchant of late to say things that capture the fancy of the American public.
First there was the slight of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and more recently there was a remark about the death of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Kennedy was speaking at a hearing last week with the director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons when he commented on the fact that a growing number of Americas don’t believe that Epstein committed suicide, as authorities in New York claim.
But it was the flair that the GOP senator employed that got everyone’s attention.
“Christmas ornaments, drywall and Jerry Epstein. Name three things that don’t hang themselves,” Kennedy said, misstating Epstein’s first name as Jerry. “That is what the American people think.”
“That’s what the American people think, and they deserve some answers,” he added.
The New York City medical examiner ruled that Epstein took his own life inside his Manhattan prison cell on Aug. 10, Fox News reported.
However, it was announced the day of the hearing that two guards on duty the night the billionaire died were charged with making false records and conspiring to make false records.
Kathleen Hawk Sawyer, the director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, said during at the hearing the FBI is now checking for any criminal elements surrounding Epstein’s death.
Kennedy asked her to convey a message to authorities in New York.
“I know that you’re not in charge of these investigations, but you talk to the people who are. And I need you to take a very respectful message today,” he said.
“Tell the American people what happened. And don’t rush it so that they don’t do a thorough investigation,” Kennedy continued. “But you and I both know they can make this a top priority and get this done more quickly than they normally would. They need to do that. And I’d like you to deliver that message.”
Kennedy drew the ire of the liberal media early this month when he slammed Pelosi during a Trump campaign rally in Louisiana.
“In three short years, President Trump has doubled the growth in the greatest economy in all of human history. And do you know what our Democratic friends have done for him?” Kennedy asked. “Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to impeach him.”
“I don’t mean any disrespect, but it must suck to be that dumb,” he added, drawing laughter from the crowd.
And a grin from President Trump.
Back to Epstein, the American people do not believe he committed suicide and have turned his controversial death into a running joke online.
