Ungrateful nation? Melania Trump booed at youth opioid awareness event, as POTUS donates salary to combat crisis

First lady Melania Trump was loudly booed on Tuesday as she was introduced to an audience reportedly comprised primarily of middle school and high school students.

Mrs. Trump made an appearance at the B’More Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, and was met with boos by a surprisingly raucous assembly of more than 2,500 middle and high school students.

“As part of #BeBest, Mrs. Trump focuses on understanding the effects of opioid abuse on children & helping families who have been affected,” White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted Tuesday.

Displaying the class she has become known for, Mrs. Trump thanked the event host for “the warm introduction,” before addressing the students, according to NBC News.

The rude reception came on the day her husband, President Donald Trump, donated his third-quarter salary to combat the opioid crisis, the network reported.

CNN reporter Kate Bennett noted on Twitter that the students were rudely talking “throughout her five minutes of remarks” — this being, perhaps, an indication of the state of our schools today, where authorities have little control.

“In my three years covering [the first lady] at events, that was the worst booing she has received at a public event where she has given solo remarks,” Bennett added.

There’s little love lost for President Trump in Baltimore, following his critical remarks about the city — he called some areas of the city a “disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess” — and the lack of effort by the late Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., to address the problems in Baltimore.

Cummings’ recent death certainly didn’t help matters.

At the same time, the deranged hatred of President Trump is spilling over to the first lady, even though the position is traditionally seen as a non-political role.

A quick example of this unhinged behavior is seen here:

Not that Melania Trump doesn’t have her supporters, as seen when Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, took to Twitter to call on followers to prove the media wrong in its “breathless” reporting of the booing.

“The Mainstream Media is breathlessly reporting that Melania Trump was booed by activists at a Youth Opioid Summit in Baltimore They want America to believe that she is universally disliked. Prove them wrong,” he tweeted.

Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., also responded to call the booing “absolutely disgraceful.”

“If any issue should be free from abusive, rude behavior, it should be protecting kids from opioids. Has the left no sense of decency?!?” he tweeted.
