Try to process this one without a hearty belly laugh … CNN’s Brian Stelter on Sunday collaborated with an “expert” to declare that supporters of President Trump are in a “destructive cult” and are the victims of “mind control.”

It gets even better, as Stelter and his expert, former “Moonie” Steven Hassan, agreed that Thanksgiving gatherings would be a great time to stage an intervention to take “the first step of deprogramming” Trump voters.

Deprogramming, as in reprogramming, is the goal here. Desperate times at CNN apparently require desperate measures … as in, tie down your loved ones in front of a TV for some marathon CNN programming sessions … do it for “America and democracy and truth.”

No, really.

“The first step with anyone who’s a true believer is contact with people that are outside the bubble,” said so-called “mental health expert” Hassan. “Cult leaders want to isolate their people. They want — they want family and friends to just disappear rather than keep engaged. Hey, did you read this article? What do you think of it? You know, I’ll watch one of your shows, watch one of my shows. In other words, appealing to the person’s true self, their authentic self, that wants to be a good person, that wants — that believes in America and democracy and truth.”

“For the people who are dreading Thanksgiving, you’re saying it’s an opportunity to get together?” asked Stelter.

“Exactly. Let’s — we’re family. We’re friends, let’s talk. And you know, truth will come out. Truth will stand up to scrutiny,” said Hassan.

Funny thing about this mental health expert, who happens to be selling a book entitled “The Cult of Trump” … authentic, ethical mental health professionals are prohibited from diagnosing or recommending treatment for anyone they have not examined.

But of course this is CNN and Brian Stelter’s show “Reliable Sources,” so we are in a totally different realm of perception.

Hassan began with a description of how he defines a “destructive cult,” as opposed to a “healthy cult” … yep, obviously, healthy cults are a thing for liberals.

“I define a destructive cult as an authoritarian pyramid-structured group with someone at the top who claims to have total power and total wisdom that uses the deception and control of behavior, information, thoughts, and emotions to make people loyal and dependent and obedient followers,” he said.

“So, for me, the issue between an ethical healthy cult, where you’re free to think and free to leave, versus a destructive cult … I’m referring to Trump’s organization and followership as a destructive cult, where people are being fed propaganda and they’re not being encouraged to think for themselves. They’re not being encouraged to really explore and look at the details and arrive at their own conclusion. Much of what they’re hearing is emotionally driven, loaded words, thought-stopping and thought-terminating-type clichés like ‘fake news’ or ‘build the wall’ or ‘Make America Great Again.’”

One obvious question here in trying to understand the man’s differentiation between good and bad “cults” … has anyone ever had a problem in leaving MAGA country after deciding to do so? Are there people out there enforcing permanent, irrevocable Trump fan clubs?

Stelter brought up the issue of “mind control” and asked “how is that provable?”

“We can start with the pathological lying,” Hassan claimed, “which is characteristic of destructive cult leaders. Saying things in a very confident way that have nothing to do with facts or truthfulness. The blaming others and never taking responsibility for his own failures and faults. Shunning and kicking out anyone who raises questions or concerns about his own behavior. His use of fear mongering immigration is a horrible thing.”

So, be advised … it is actually quite rare to have a Brian Stelter viewer in a given small group, but the risk is there. If you have family members in one of those “healthy cults” of liberalism, they may be inspired this coming holiday to take it upon themselves to deprogram you.
