How ’bout ‘dem silver-spoon Ivy Leaguers? On Saturday, “climate-justice” students and alumni from Yale and Harvard swarmed the field at halftime of the football game between the two schools and occupied the midfield area for about an hour, delaying the second half of the game.

The protest began when a few dozen people took the field at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Conn., carrying signs demanding that Ivy League schools divest from fossil fuel industries. When the half-time expired and it was clear that police were not intervening, hundreds more from the stands streamed in to join the fun.
Chants of “Hey, hey, ho, ho, fossil fuels have got to go,” served as halftime entertainment.
Of course, all of these folks would this week be boarding fuel-sucking planes to go home for their Thanksgiving dinners with family. Hopefully at least some of those families will have meaningful discussions at the table about how idiots can quickly besmirch the good names of multi-generational blue-blood dynasties.
Speaking of idiots, not wanting to be left out of the discussion, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sagely tweeted in reaction: “Activism disrupts the present to change the future.”

Dan Bongino expressed an opinion that certainly aligned with a majority of conservatives, and perhaps a majority of Americans when he posted: “If we haven’t yet reached peak stupid, then we are assuredly about to cross the event horizon.”

Eventually, after the protesters ignored the public address announcer’s pleas to leave the field to allow the game to resume, police moved forward and peacefully escorted the remaining demonstrators off the field.
After the game finally got back underway, the delay caused the ending to be played in the fading light of day as the 105-year old stadium has no lights. Yale came from behind to win the game 50-43 in two overtimes.
The Stamford Advocate reported:
“Yeah, it was surreal. But we were ready to go until tomorrow,” said JP Shohfi, who caught 10 passes for 103 yards and the game-tying touchdown with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter. “It didn’t matter if there were lights or not. It didn’t matter the time of the day. We were ready to go again and again and again.”
Is it possible that the storied Ivy League of schools is losing its edge in attracting the cream of the crop … the most promising and capable young minds in the land? These are supposed to be high-performing people who are not easily swept away by popular trends and deceptively crafted political fables.
Consider that earlier this month another Ivy League school, Brown University, hosted a gathering of students organized by a group called RailRoad that put on an event entitled “Prison Abolition 101.” According to The Brown Daily Herald:
“The end goal is to not have prisons as any form of incarceration,” said RailRoad member Grace Austin ’23, while presenting at the event. “Punishment at any stage doesn’t guarantee any kind of growth.”
Aida Sherif ’22, who also presented at the event, said that while prison abolition may seem radical, the roots of the criminal justice system make the process of locking up felons irredeemable.
“Prisons were founded in the ideas of punishing the poor, punishing people of color,” Sherif said. “I don’t see it as an institution that can ever fully break away from those foundations.”
Climate justice, social justice … in this writer’s humble view, the future will deliver justice all right, but not at all in the form of what some of these bright folks are envisioning.
