Though top congressional Democrats are doubling, tripling and quadrupling down on their “witch hunts” against President Donald Trump and his allies, their Republican colleagues appear to believe they’re all bark, no bite.
Speaking Saturday morning on MSNBC, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Smith suggested he may soon launch an investigation into House Intelligence Committee ranking member Devin Nunes over unsubstantiated, disputed and conspiratorial allegations regarding his alleged activities in Ukraine.
Democratic Rep. Adam Smith said on @amjoyshow that it’s “quite likely” there will be an ethics investigation into Devin Nunes’ meetings/relationship with Lev Parnas. @MSNBC

Published by CNN and The Daily Beast, the allegations from recently indicted political operative Lev Parnas are that Nunes essentially conspired with an allegedly corrupt former Ukrainian prosecutor to affect the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
Nunes has disputed these allegations (and vowed to sue), and save for the word of Parnas, no other evidence has surfaced to substantiate these wild claims. But Smith appears to believe an investigation is warranted, notwithstanding these facts.
Speaking of investigations based on unsubstantiated conspiracies, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff has likewise pledged that his impeachment operation against President Donald Trump is far from over.
“It’s important to know we’re not stopping,” he defiantly announced Sunday morning on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” adding that the evidence is allegedly “already overwhelming.”
When asked by host Chuck Todd whether more hearings may be held before the end of the year, he replied, “We don’t foreclose the possibility of others.”
It’s not clear what he meant by “we.” According to reports, the Intelligence Committee has concluded its public hearings and will now prepare an impeachment report for the House Judiciary Committee. Once the committee processes it, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler will then most likely hold his own hearings.
What Schiff said Sunday was an abbreviated version of what he had said Friday to the Los Angeles Times.
“We’re not foreclosing the possibility of additional depositions or hearings, but we’re also not willing to wait months and months and let them play rope-a-dope with us in the courts,” he reportedly said.
It seems clear that Schiff has no interest in backing off from his investigation, despite recent polling data showing that independents have soured on it:
Wow – Impeachment way under water with independents. 49% oppose, only 34% support.
The American people see through this.https://t.co/ZZjvcZuV76

Democrats chose all witnesses.
Democrats cherry-picked leaks from the depositions.
Democrats broke House rules to block Republican subpoenas.
But the American people see through it.https://t.co/6yfJL0Sb9q

… and it’s even less popular in swing states. https://t.co/lObsiCHs7F

So independent voters’ opposition to impeachment has jumped 10%
Aggregate poll numbers show Trump’s job approval is way up since the beginning of the month at 44% on RCP
So it’s been bad for Democrats
But we will see what changes after Sondland’s testimony factors in

Because of data such as this, the president and his Republican allies in Congress reportedly remain skeptical that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will eventually pull the trigger and initiate his actual impeachment.
The polls have “fueled speculation among Senate Republicans that Pelosi may opt for a vote on a censure resolution and skip the prospect of a Senate trial that could drag on for a month or more, during which impeachment fatigue among voters could intensify,” The Hill reported.
This despite the Democrats’ tough talk, which suggests that Republicans think their Democrat colleagues are all bark, no bite.
The president appears to feel similarly.
“No, I don’t expect it,” he said in a Fox News interview Friday morning after being asked whether he believes Pelosi will eventually pull the trigger. “I think it’s very hard for them to impeach you when they have absolutely nothing.”
Later in the same interview, he added that, personally speaking, he wants Pelosi to pull the trigger, as doing so would automatically transfer the proceedings to the GOP-led Senate, where Republicans would then have all the power.
The power to do what? The power to force a whole lot of figures to testify:
If Democrats impeach Trump, that means the Senate will hold a trial
First people to call to the stand:
Joe Biden
Hunter Biden
Barack Obama
Valerie Jarrett
Hillary Clinton
Bill Clinton
John Podesta
Eric Holder
Loretta Lynch
James Comey
Andrew McCabe
Game on, Democrats

?BREAKING?
President Trump wants to have a Senate impeachment trial, expects Joe and Hunter Biden and whistleblower would be among the witnesses
— Benny (@bennyjohnson) November 22, 2019
OF COURSE TRUMP WANTS A FULL TRIAL BECAUSE REPUBLICANS CAN CALL ANY WITNESSES THEY WANT INCLUDING BIDEN, HUNTER, SCHIFF AND THE WHISTLEBLOWER – Trump agrees not to press Senate Republicans for immediate dismissal of charges https://t.co/cyWgcedat6

Meanwhile, the president is guaranteed an acquittal, meaning he and his allies have nothing to lose by the House impeaching him — but everything to gain.
