House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif, highlighted Thursday a letter citing House rules governing the committee hearing process that called on Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, to allow Republicans a day to call their own witnesses.
The letter, from Republican members of the House Intel panel, made an appeal to the notion of “fairness,” as promised by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“Although Speaker Pelosi promised that Democrats would ‘treat the President with fairness,’ you have repeatedly prevented Republicans from fully and fairly examining issues central to the Democrats’ ‘impeachment inquiry,'” the GOP lawmakers said in the letter.
Signed by nine Republicans, to include ranking member Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., the letter cites House rules to request “our right to convene a hearing with witnesses selected by the Minority to testify.”
McCarthy took to Twitter to draw attention to the letter, which garnered little notice from the media.
“Chairman Adam Schiff has repeatedly denied fundamental fairness and due process throughout the course of this sham impeachment,” McCarthy tweeted.

“As the committee continues to conduct the Democrats’ partisan and one-sided ‘impeachment inquiry,’ there are still important perspectives and serious issues that you have prevented the committee from examining,” the letter added.
“Your failure to schedule this hearing shall constitute evidence of your denial of fundamental fairness and due process,” the missive concluded.
The rule referenced was “not displaced” by the Democrats’ impeachment resolution that set the parameters of their impeachment inquiry, according to the Republicans.
The rule is seen here:
The Minority Witness Rule (Clause 2(j)(1) of Rule XI): The Minority is entitled to one additional day of related hearings at which to call their own witnesses if a majority of the Minority Members make their demand before the committee’s hearing is gaveled closed.
Rep. Schiff brought to a close Thursday the one-sided impeachment hearings that did little to prove the president should be impeached. Hearings that Schiff controlled with a tight fist.
McCarthy appeared on Fox Business Network’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” to question if Democrats will have enough votes to impeach the president after the spectacle.
“I wonder if the Democrats will even have the votes to move impeachment now,” he said, though Democratic lawmakers rarely break rank knowing the consequences.
Not only did McCarthy question if Democrats have the votes, but he also suggested that the GOP may “gain” votes against impeachment from the opposing party, CNN reporter Manu Raju tweeted.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told me that he was not going to lose any GOP votes during impeachment.
“I think we are going to gain Dems,” McCarthy said.
He also rejected Fiona Hill’s testimony and said he thinks Ukraine meddled in 2016 elections.
“I think they did.”
