MSNBC contributor warns Dems: ‘In America, a sociopath will beat a socialist seven days a week’

MSNBC contributor Steven Schmidt stunningly managed on Wednesday to posit an extremely intelligent point while simultaneously positing a thousand+ dubious ones.

He accomplished this bizarre feat while speaking with a group of panelists prior to the start of the latest 2020 Democrat primary debate. The discussion centered on the Democrats’ strategies for winning the election against President Donald Trump.

His core point was that any Democrat candidates who embrace socialism stand no chance against The Donald come 2020.

“The Trump presidency is an emergency for the country,” his statement began. “There is no higher issue than his removal from office.”

That was clearly one of the dubious points, given as the United States happens to be faring quite well right now. The same holds true of President Donald Trump, whose favorability and approval ratings have been holding steady in the 40 percent range on average.

“So that calls for a candidate who has the ability to assemble the broadest, widest possible political coalition,” Schmidt breathlessly continued. “That includes some Republicans, independents, Democrats to win an election that will be the most consequential election I think this country has had since 1864, maybe the 1940 election.”

It’s not clear what he meant by that. What’s known is that in the 1864 presidential election, then-incumbent President Abraham Lincoln won reelection. And in the 1940 presidential election, then-incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt won reelection.

After 30 seconds of unleashing mainly dubious points, Schmidt finally unveiled his one — and very rare — intelligent point, though he managed to bungle it as well.

“I do think there is a danger when you look at some of the ideology that we’ve seen front and center in this field. In America, a sociopath will beat a socialist seven days a week and twice on Sunday,” he said.

By sociopath, he clearly meant Trump. But the president has never been diagnosed as a sociopath. That gaffe aside, the underlying point — that anyone can beat a socialist — appears to be 100 percent accurate, as shown by polling data.

“In a new Hill.TV/HarrisX American Barometer poll … an overwhelming majority of respondents, 76 percent, said they would not vote for a ‘socialist’ political candidate, while only 24 percent of those polled said they would vote for a socialist candidate,” The Hill reported four months ago.

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll conducted last spring likewise found that only a 25 percent minority of Americans viewed “socialist” as a desirable trait for a presidential candidate.

It’s presumably in part because of polling data such as this that the president has made it a mission to both draw attention to the Democrats’ embrace of socialism and also remind the American people that, under his leadership, the U.S. will never go that route.

Case in point:

Dovetailing back to Schmidt, he continued by once again dropping more dubious points.

“Nobody should underestimate Donald Trump’s ability to frame an argument, to demagogue an opponent,” he said.

FYI, Democrat candidates running for office also possess the latter skill

“And when we look at impeachment — despite the evidence and facts — the most likely outcome at this hour is impeachment, acquittal and the possibility perhaps of reelection,” the MSNBC contributor continued.

Fact-check: TRUE.

“And then you would have a completely lawless and unchecked president who would know that he would be able to survive basically any level of wrongdoing, not knowing what the line is,” he concluded.

Fact-check: FALSE.

His allegations of lawlessness seemed to be based on the myriad of unproven or outright debunked conspiracy theories that congressional Democrats have been bandying about, including the debunked Russian collusion delusion conspiracy theory.

For real examples of lawlessness, one must look to former President Barack Hussein Obama, a man who ran an administration so lawless that even a contributor at The Washington Post, one of America’s most left-wing papers, called it out back in 2015.

As examples of this lawlessness, famed attorney David Bernstein cited Obama “refusing to comply with the War Powers Act when bombing Libya (and later the Islamic State),” “failing to prosecute anyone at the IRS for the 501(c)(4) scandal” and “refusing to enforce Obamacare provisions when they were politically inconvenient.”

But an even better example may be the former president’s malicious refusal to comply with the orders of a federal judge. Not once has Trump ever done the same.

As noted by Harvard Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, Trump has the habit of “appealing, rather than defying” court orders that he dislikes.

Obama meanwhile defied court orders whenever he felt like it.

For instance, flashback to 2015, when his administration reportedly issued work permit authorizations to 2,000 illegals, despite a temporary restraining order blocking them from doing so.

The order was issued as per a lawsuit filed by 26 states, including Texas. Not until May of that year was the Obama administration forced to fess up to the crime.

“After months of obfuscation and stall tactics by the Obama administration, the president’s lawyers, have been forced to admit that they acted outside the law by implementing president’s executive amnesty – even after a federal judge had ordered them to stop,” then-newly elected Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said at the time.

As for liberal Democrats like Schmidt, they were too busy at the time — and remain too busy here now in the present, it would appear — worshiping Obama to notice any of his lawlessness.
