It is astonishing that Joe Biden not only remains in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, but that he also continues to poll near the top. The man is a never-ending gaffe machine who seems constantly confused about where he is and what he is doing — and Wednesday night’s Democratic debate was no different.
The former vice president had perhaps his worst blunder yet when he was pushed into a corner and forced to defend his support among black voters. He claimed at one point to have the endorsement of the “only African-American woman” ever elected to the U.S. Senate, seemingly oblivious to the fact that Kamala Harris, a senator from California, was on the stage with him.
It all began with Cory Booker putting Biden in his sights when he singled out the 77-year-old politician for recently saying he was against marijuana legalization and for reportedly using a focus group to gauge his support among black voters.
“We need our policies that respect dignity, keep us safe and strong. I want to turn back to this issue of black voters. I have a lifetime of experience with black voters. I’ve been one since I was 18,” Booker said. “Nobody on this stage should need a focus group to hear from African-American voters. Black voters are pissed off, and they’re worried. They’re pissed off because the only time our problems are paid attention to is when people are looking for a vote.”
“I have a lot of respect for the vice president. He has sworn me into my office and he’s a hero. This week I heard him literally say I don’t think we should legalize marijuana. I thought you might have been high when you said it,” Booker continued, laughing. “And let me tell you because marijuana — marijuana in our country is already legal for privileged people. And it’s — the war on drugs has been a war on black and brown people.”
Biden flipped on his previous marijuana comments and claimed he was now for legalization. He then made the biggest gaffe of the night.
“I’m part of that Obama coalition. I come out of a black community in terms of my support,” he said. “If you notice I have more people supporting me in the black community that have announced for me, because they know me, they know who I am. Three former chairs of the [Congressional] Black Caucus, the only African-American woman that had ever been elected to the Senate a whole range of people …”
Booker looked about as confused by the last statement as everyone must have been watching.
“No, that’s not true, the other one is here …” Harris said, earning laughter from the audience.
Biden then tried to correct himself.
“I said the first, I said the first African-American woman!” he said.
“It’s a gaffe unlike any other I’ve seen in a debate performance,” commented MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell of Biden in post-debate coverage.
