Nunes: White House involvement in Ukraine was prompted by Dems’ smear of Trump in the first place

Rep. Devin Nunes and Mark Levin of Fox News had an astute discussion on Sunday about the deceitful pretzel logic in play by Democrats in the left’s ongoing efforts to unseat President Trump via their completely partisan impeachment inquiry.

It was on Sunday’s “Life, Liberty & Levin” that Nunes pointed out the Trump administration was only led into Ukraine to investigate Ukrainian knowledge of the “dirt” being allegedly uncovered in a smear campaign against the president by Democrats. Yet those crafty Dems twisted that warranted investigation of their crimes into a bizarre rationale for impeachment.

Democrats paid Fusion GPS, a private investigative operation, to unearth political dirt on Trump using murky Ukrainian sources. That subsequently led to the lengthy, wasteful investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller that came up empty in terms of being able to provide any valid incriminating information useful to the Democrats.

Nunes, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, told Levin that it was completely reasonable for the White House and the president’s representatives to go and seek answers of their own and clarity on where the attacks on him were originating from.

“What’s just amazing is,” said Nunes, “the Democrats continue to say, ‘oh, this is some kind of conspiracy theory’… The fact that Rudy Giuliani would be in Ukraine or talking to Ukrainians about, ‘hey, where’s this dirt that’s being dug up on my client?'”

“It would be a dereliction of Rudy Giuliani’s responsibilities as the personal attorney to the president [not to do so],” Nunes added.

“You had so many problems in Ukraine,” Nunes also said. “The Democrats, they hate to admit this, but their sources for the Fusion GPS [dossier] — a company that they were paying to dig up the dirt on Trump that ultimately made its way into the FBI — there were Ukrainian sources there, so they were paying people to go into Ukraine and dig up dirt.”

“Some of this dirt came from high-ranking Ukrainian officials, allegedly. Remember, we spent three years with this Mueller nonsense. [Giuliani] had every right and responsibility to be over there,” he added.

Nunes also accused Democrats of pressuring high-ranking Ukrainian officials to provide damaging information about the president so they could use it to force him out of office.

Levin began the segment pointing out that there was no reason for Dems to object to Giuliani or other administration officials from going outside regular channels for diplomatic or investigative purposes.

“This phrase, ‘irregular channel,’ the Democrats, the bureaucrats, are trying to create the impression with the American people that something irregular is taking place. We have the regular channel, which are the policies being pushed by the bureaucrats of the State Department and an irregular channel — the president’s special envoy,” said Levin.

“Virtually every president has had special envoys using this irregular channel,” he continued. “George Washington had John Jay, went around Jefferson. One of the most famous was Franklin Roosevelt, I know the left loves him. He had Harry Hopkins who actually lived in the White House, negotiated with Stalin and Churchill and others, and infuriated the bureaucracy at the State Department.

“Since the president sets foreign policy for the executive branch, don’t we have this reversed? Isn’t the State Department that’s doing the irregular things when they defy a president’s policy?” Levin asked.

Nunes pointed out that they know that there was more than one DNC operative working with the Ukrainians before Trump’s election and he also recalled that during the 2016 presidential election, the sitting Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. “publicly trashed the Trump campaign, which is almost unheard of for a sitting ambassador, a sitting ambassador to side with one party over another in Washington D.C.”

“Now look,” Nunes continued, “none of the ambassador corps just like no one in the media thought President Trump was going to win, but I only know of one ambassador that actually publicly came out against the Trump campaign in 2016 and that was the Ukrainian ambassador who was working very closely with DNC officials. So what’s just amazing is that the Democrats continue to say ‘this is some kind of conspiracy theory.'”

“So the fact that Rudy Giuliani would be in Ukraine or talking to Ukrainians about, ‘hey, where is this dirt that’s being dug up on my client. It would be dereliction of Rudy Giuliani’s responsibilities as the personal attorney to the president while he’s under investigation by Mueller, remember we spent three years with this Mueller nonsense, he had every right and responsibility,” Nunes concluded.
