During a “Fan Mail Friday” segment on Fox News’ “The Five,” the hosts admitted to unusual things, but one bizarre moment stuck out from the rest when Jesse Watters recounted a “weird phase” he went through as a young man.
Instagram user @Lyna_Mark asked: “What was the weirdest phase you went through growing up?” The crew recalled a handful of cringe-worthy moments that just about anyone can relate to.
“I went through two weird phases,” said Kennedy. “One, when I was in fifth grade I really liked going to the roller rink, so I could roller skate with my friends, and I used to put vaseline on my face because I thought it made me look really good.” The retroactive embarrassment was palpable as the hosts broke out into laughter over the mental image.
Up next, Jesse Watters admitted to a “phase” that indeed would be classified as “weird.”
“I thought I was black for like a year, year-and-a-half,” he said, as co-host Greg Gutfeld butted in.
“Just stop there!” Gutfeld shouted.
“No, I wanted to be black, I did, I really, I had all the gear,” Watters continued, though failing to elaborate on what that “gear” was.
“I don’t wanna know,” Gutfeld continued, his face turning red. “Is there any other phase —?”
Kennedy then reached over to left-leaning co-host Juan Williams and (likely sarcastically) asked if he wanted her to “call human resources.” Surprisingly, the admittedly liberal crew member didn’t call Watters’ admission “racist” and even attempted to bolster the obviously-white Watters’ argument.
“No, it’s cool,” Williams said, “because actually he did a test. Tell ’em about the test.”
“Oh yeah, well our DNA test says I’m 0.1 percent black,” Watters responded.
“There you go,” Williams concluded.

Williams copped to “not going home,” Dana Perino admitted to attending “poetry nights” with a girlfriend at a hipster coffee shop, and Gutfeld reminded everyone that clove cigarettes were once a big thing.
Twitter liberals were predictably outraged:
Ok so @JesseBWatters thinks racism is a weird phase. https://t.co/CR3kgDC2zy

Being black was a novelty to him then, and now.

Let’s see…he was born in 1978…meaning he’d been in his mid/late teens in the mid/late nineties. So either he’s trying to talk about wearing hip-hop fashion, or he was wearing Madiba shirts and dashiki suits, but either way his idiot racist mouth had its own ideas.

I’m pretty sure Jesse has a black face picture in his past.

But while leftist commentary about the segment was overwhelmingly negative, conservatives popped in to remind everyone of that time when Nancy Pelosi said something very similar about her own grandson while speaking about DACA recipients.
“I’m reminded of my own grandson. He is Irish, English, whatever, whatever, and Italian-American, he is a mix,” she said. “But he looks more the other [Italian] side of the family, shall we say. And when he had his sixth birthday … he had a very close friend whose name is Antonio, he’s from Guatemala. And he has beautiful tan skinned, beautiful brown eyes, and this was a proud day for me, because when my grandson blew out the candles on his cake, they said ‘did you make a wish?'”
“He said ‘yes,’ he made a wish,” she continued. “‘What is your wish?’ ‘I wish I had brown skin and brown eyes like Antonio.'”
