Florida man arrested for reckless driving, tells cops he was rushing home from ‘cheating on his wife’

A Florida man pulled over this week for reckless driving decided honesty may be the best policy with police … but he may have been a tad too honest.

An arrest affidavit obtained by Smoking Gun shows that Jon Earl Pickard, 52, told police the reason he was driving erratically was because he “needed to get home in a hurry because he was cheating on his wife.”

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office

Pickard was driving a 2015 Honda Accord and was going in excess of 90 mph in a 55 mph zone on U.S. Route 19 in Florida.

A Tarpon Springs Police Department officer pulled Pickard over while the man was headed back to his Palm Harbor residence following an extramarital affair. Police said Pickard “indicated his driving was reckless and endangering because he needed to get home in a hurry because he was cheating on his wife.”

Cheating was not the only thing Pickard admitted to. While he was booked on a reckless driving charge, which is a misdemeanor, police also found a baggie of crack cocaine in his pocket, which led to a felony drug possession charge. Pickard reportedly “spontaneously said he had just purchased it for $50.00.” The bag contained 2.1 grams and tested positive for cocaine. Pickard invoked his rights after being read his Miranda Rights by police.

Pickard previously had a run-in with the law that indicates his marriage is not in the best place. He was arrested in March of this year for domestic battery following a confrontation with his wife where he allegedly shoved and scratched her. Pickard’s wife, who is 55 years old, later requested the misdemeanor domestic battery charge be dropped and that her husband not be prosecuted. The case was eventually dropped by the State Attorney’s office.

It’s unlikely Pickard will have such luck this time around. He was released Sunday night on $2250 bail and is set to appear in court to answer for his alleged crimes on December 5.

It’s unclear why Pickard thought rushing home from having an affair was going to help the situation with his wife, but the baggie of cocaine likely explains the scattered thinking.

While strange crime happens all over the United States on a daily basis, Florida, which is now officially the president’s home state, has trended on social media for years for being home to the oddest, head-scratching criminal behavior.

From keeping alligators in a pool to asking police to arrest a mailbox while on a Xanax drug trip, there’s nothing quite like Florida crime.

A woman shoplifting this year from a MadRags clothing shop was caught on camera seemingly celebrating her crime by twerking in the store. Another woman was arrested for vandalizing a park with feces. She reportedly wanted to ruin her boss’ party that was to take place there.

There’s also nothing quite like the excuses given to police in Florida. A woman last year told officers that the wind must have blown cocaine into her purse. Another man argued last year that he wasn’t drinking and driving because he was only drinking alcohol at stop signs.
