Stella McCartney, the English fashion designer who created Meghan Markle’s wedding reception dress, came under fire across the pond for sharing a photo of the Duchess of Sussex wearing an overcoat she designed during Remembrance Day services.
The photo was shared on Instagram, before being deleted by McCartney because of the backlash over her promoting her brand on a day set aside to honor veterans.
The caption read: “So honoured to have HRH Duchess of Sussex in our Autumn ’19 coat at Remembrance Day service. x Stella.”
Equivalent to Memorial Day in the United States, Remembrance Day is observed in Commonwealth member states to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
Markle wore the McCartney black-belted, double-breasted overcoat during services at the Cenotaph in Westminster on Sunday, according to Page Six. The piece carries a price tag in excess of $2,300.
Other members of the Royal Family on hand to watch the service included the Queen, the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine (Kate Middleton), and the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla — Markle stood on a different balcony with the Countess of Wessex and Sir Timothy Laurence.
(This having to do with the seniority and ranking within the Royal Family.)
“Remembrance Day is to honour those that fought for us not to use for advertising purposes. Pretty shocked,” one social media user wrote.
“Using remembrance day to advertise your clothes is a little disrespectful!! People died and you take pictures of people showing respect for advertising purposes. Just wrong,” wrote another.
McCartney has described Markle as a “women’s woman,” saying: “She is not a difficult client to make look beautiful.”
And the British designer did have some defenders online.
One social media user tweeted: “[McCartney] is a British icon and inspiration to all women in business. I am deeply saddened that Instagram trolls bashed her for expressing gratitude in [Markle] wearing her label for Remembrance Day. As you can see from this post from 2017, Stella is the real deal.”

The irony of the British Media reporting Stella McCartney’s post as how “insensitive” it was, is that they are the same ones who were more focused in any signs of a feud between the BRF & H&M, rather than the events of #RemembranceDay Clearly they didn’t get what they wanted.
