Nunes determined to make Adam Schiff first witness called by GOP in impeachment hearing

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said Monday night during an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity,” that the GOP’s first witness in any impeachment proceeding will be Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Host Sean Hannity asked his guest if Schiff will be subpoenaed, but the Republican noted that only Schiff can issue subpoenas.

“Darn, I forgot he’s judge, jury, and executioner. I forgot,” Hannity replied.

But Nunes stressed that Democrats have already set a precedent here.

“Remember, last Congress, they were hell-bent on making sure that former Congressman Dana Rohrbacher testified,” Nunes explained. “I said, I don’t think this is a very good idea having members of Congress come testify and give depositions. So, congratulations Democrats that were on the House Judiciary Committee — it’s now become the impeachment committee — they have set the precedent for members of Congress to give depositions.”

“And so you heard our minority leader, the Republican leader, Kevin McCarthy, say that Schiff is our first witness,” he continued. “You’ve had John Ratcliffe, a former US attorney, say Adam Schiff is our first witness. So, yes, he is, in fact, going to be our first witness.”

The whistleblower who raised concerns about the president’s call with Ukraine had contacted Schiff’s staff on the House Intel Committee before filing a complaint.

A decision that could subject this individual to felony false statement charges for not disclosing that he had contacted Schiff. The whistleblower also has ties to Biden, who is at the center of the controversy.

And the whistleblower’s attorney has requested that he testify to Congress in writing, rather than appearing in person — if Democrats even allow him to testify.

Earlier in the segment, Hannity explained that President Trump was looking to get to the bottom of former Vice President Joe Biden’s actions involving Ukraine, which includes his son being paid up to $50,000 to sit on the board of a Ukrainian gas company.

Nunes cited reporting from The Hill’s John Solomon, who said Democrats were first to enlist help from Ukraine in affecting US elections.

The mainstream media continues to ignore this,” he insisted. “They do not want this out there, that’s why they claim it’s a conspiracy theory and they don’t like Solomon’s reporting.

“These are the facts,” Nunes added. “It would be dereliction of duty for the president’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, to not go to Ukraine to figure out what on earth were the Democrats doing in Ukraine paying for dirt from Ukrainian officials to dirty up the Trump campaign in 2016.”

The Republican lawmaker included his own actions when he was chairman of the House Intel Committee.

It would also be dereliction of duty for me and my committee not to be meeting with Ukrainians, looking for information as to where did Nellie Ohr — wife of DOJ official Bruce Ohr — come up with the information to put in the Steele dossier that ended up with the F.B.I.?” Nunes said. “Who is this person [former DNC contractor] Alexandra Chalupa? Who are these people? So the president had every right to look at it.”

Nunes said this was all being hidden “because of what Solomon has now uncovered — there is a tie to the Bidens and the State Department.”

Solomon reported Monday that memos show Burisma Holdings, the firm that hired Hunter Biden, pressed the Obama administration on corruption allegations against the company — one month before Biden threatened to withhold $1 billion in aid if a top prosecutor wasn’t fired.

(The real quid pro quo at play here.)

“Breaking: Memos detailing Hunter Biden’s contacts with Obama State Department released,” Solomon tweeted. “VP son’s Ukrainian gas firm pressed US officials to end corruption allegations … just a month before Joe Biden forced firing of prosecutor overseeing case.”
