Trump warns Dems will alter transcripts of secret testimony

With good reason, President Donald Trump has no trust whatsoever in the secret impeachment proceedings Democrats have been holding in the basement of the U.S. Capitol.

The partisan impeachment inquisition is being headed up by Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and Trump took to social media on Sunday to warn that Schiff may alter transcripts of those who have testified to meet the Democratic Party’s needs.

In making the accusation, the president cited Schiff falsely quoting his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump said Republicans in the room should release their own transcripts of the private testimony, adding that if anyone is to be impeached, it should be Schiff, “a proven liar, leaker & freak.”

Trump tweeted: “If Shifty Adam Schiff, who is a corrupt politician who fraudulently made up what I said on the ‘call,’ is allowed to release transcripts of the Never Trumpers & others that are & were interviewed, he will change the words that were said to suit the Dems purposes.”

“Republicans should give their own transcripts of the interviews to contrast with Schiff’s manipulated propaganda,” he continued in another tweet. “House Republicans must have nothing to do with Shifty’s rendition of those interviews. He is a proven liar, leaker & freak who is really the one who should be impeached!”

Schiff has come under fire from GOP lawmakers over reports that the whistleblower met with a House Intel Committee aide before filing his complaint, and that Schiff sat on this information. The Democrat has been accused of coaching witnesses and is suspected of being behind a number of leaks to the media.

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., the ranking member, posted this tweet last month:

Active Sunday on Twitter, the president also responded to reports that several GOP senators are willing to say quid pro quo was involved in his call with Ukraine, but that it wasn’t an impeachable offense.

In his tweet, Trump is adamant that there was no quid pro quo.

“False stories are being reported that a few Republican Senators are saying that President Trump may have done a quid pro quo, but it doesn’t matter, there is nothing wrong with that, it is not an impeachable event,” he tweeted. “Perhaps so, but read the transcript, there is no quid pro quo!”

The Washington Post reported on Friday that “a growing number” of Republican senators are ready to acknowledge that a quid pro quo did take place in the call to Ukraine, but that it does not rise to the level of an impeachable offense.

This report was mentioned by “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace in an interview with White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, with Wallace asking if Trump would accept this as a “way to get out of this controversy.”

“You act like somebody is giving a plea bargain for a lesser offense … of what crime is he being accused?” she countered. “And when will we have a chance to face the judge, jury and executioner?”

Dr. Bill Bennett, a Fox News contributor, weighed in on the issue of a quid pro quo in an interview on Sunday with “Fox & Friends.”

“All of foreign relations is a quid pro quo. You know, we do things for them, they do things for us,” Bennett said. “There’s good quid pro quo and there’s bad quid pro quo. I would argue a really bad quid pro quo was the deal with Iran that President Obama put forward.”

“This quid pro quo, if it actually was completed — which it wasn’t — was a good thing,” he continued. “We were trying to help Ukraine with arms and other things, unlike the Russians who were obviously invading the country, and unlike Obama who was sending them socks. But I think at the end of the day, people are going to realize there was no investigation of Biden in Ukraine and the money was delivered. There is no there there for that quid.”
