Manchin ruffles Dem feathers when he states he won’t back a Bernie Sanders nomination

Democratic West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin shocked Democrats and Republicans alike when he announced that he would not support fellow Senator Bernie Sanders if he were to become the party’s presidential nominee.

In a segment on Fox News, host Neil Cavuto asked if Manchin supported Sanders’ agenda, to which the Dem responded: “absolutely not.”

“Absolutely not. Bernie and I have had many conversations, I think that Bernie brings a lot to the table,” Manchin said. “Makes you think a little bit, kinda gets the blood going and stirring and everything, but it’s not practical where I come from. Bernie keeps saying ‘Medicare for all.’ I says ‘Bernie we can’t even pay for Medicare for some!’ I says, ‘Right now the trust fund is going to go broke by 2026, and these are people who have paid into it and earned it! Now you wanna expand it, what happens?’ It doesn’t make sense at all.”

Cavuto then asked Manchin who he would vote for on election day if his options were Sanders and Trump. One chuckle later, Manchin admitted, “it wouldn’t be Bernie.”

But that wasn’t good enough for the host, who wanted a definitive answer.

“Alright, so it would be the president unless you leave it blank,” Cavuto goaded.

“Well, it wouldn’t be Bernie,” he repeated.

“But would it be Donald Trump?” the host prodded once more.

“Let’s just say, I’m gonna make decisions based on what is best for my country and my state,” he said, ducking the question.

Twitter was not pleased with this departure from the “vote blue no matter who” mantra that has led the Democrat voters going into the 2020 election. Their desperation to oust Trump has created a demand for a hive mind-like dedication to the nominee, “no matter who.”

It is worth mentioning that Manchin currently represents a state that President Trump won in 2016, so it is not at all surprising to see him reject Bernie Sanders and socialist ideology. If he wants to be re-elected, he needs to vote with his constituents, not in lock-step with his party.
