One of CNN’s legal analysts has written an opinion piece fantasizing about how a President Donald Trump impeachment could lead to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi being installed as America’s president …
Legal analyst Paul Callan’s fantasy appears to be based on the belief that Vice President Mike Pence will likely also be impeached so long as Democrats can nail him for something.

“Should Democratic efforts to remove Trump from office succeed, Pence would succeed to the presidency — under normal circumstances,” his wet dream reads. “Both history and constitutional law, however, suggest that other successors to the office are possible.”
In this case, he continues, it depends on what congressional Democrats can prove “true” about the VP and his involvement with efforts by Trump to supposedly goad Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into investigating alleged corruption by several parties, including former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
“[P]residential succession, in this case, depends on … what the Vice President knew and when he knew it,” Callan writes. “Specifically, was the vice president aware during his September 1 conference with Zelensky in Poland, that Trump had previously asked for a ‘favor’ when discussing military aid and that the favor included a Ukrainian criminal probe of Joe and Hunter Biden. The political futures of Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi may well depend upon the answers to these questions.”
“What might follow could be a double impeachment scenario that would make heads spin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the president of the United States. After Pence, she’s next in the line of succession,” he enthusiastically adds.
The dream is so far-fetched that it’s been label “impeachment porn” by some:

Others have argued that Callan’s fantasy is further proof that Democrats en masse are trying to perpetrate a coup to rid America’s government of Republicans — and that this “coup” could spur real civil conflict:

That’s all this is about… They don’t want Pence as Pres. any more than they want Trump. They despise Republicans in general

@PaulCallan idiots like your articles will divide this nation further more and bring civil war! Why are you wasting your time to write crap articles like “How a Trump impeachment could lead to a Pelosi presidency”

It would guarantee a 2nd CIVIL WAR for our nation! https://t.co/6IQNC05Rvn

Callan has even written up a plan on what to do in case Democrats somehow impeach Pence before impeaching Trump.
“If Trump and Pence were both implicated in the scandal and Pence’s resignation or removal from office occurred first, Trump could nominate a new vice president under the 25th Amendment,” he writes. “The vice-presidential appointment, however, would have to be approved by a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives to become effective. What are the chances that a Democratic majority in the House would approve any vice-presidential choice from Trump? Next to zero would be my bet.”
It’s unclear why he hasn’t asked himself about the chances that a Republican majority in the Senate would approve of Trump or Pence’s impeachment …
Despite the absurdity of Callan’s fantasy, he still seems to believe that it could happen, in part because of what did happen during former President Richard Nixon’s impeachment.
“Nixon’s vice president during the early stages of the Watergate investigation was Spiro Agnew, the former governor of Maryland,” he writes. “An investigation by the Justice Department revealed that as governor of Maryland, Agnew had engaged in various acts of political corruption, including bribe-taking that continued even after his assumption of the vice presidency.”
In October of 1973, Agnew pled nolo contendere to a felony count of income tax evasion and immediately resigned from office, leaving Nixon with no VP.
In response, then-Speaker Carl Albert, a Democrat, began making preparations to be America’s next president by asking speech writer Ted Sorensen to write up a “contingency plan.”
“Those plans were dashed, of course, when President Nixon immediately appointed the very popular Gerald Ford, the Republican minority House leader, as vice president after Agnew’s resignation,” his piece concludes. “The appointment was swiftly approved by a majority vote of both houses of Congress two months later. Perhaps it’s time for Pelosi to brush the dust-off Ted Sorensen’s contingency plan memo. You never know what the future may bring in D.C. these days.”
Well, yeah, sometimes you do …
Paul…this tweet is not only delusional but dangerous. You seem mentally unhinged right now.

@PaulCallan, elevation of a congressional officer to POTUS has never been tested in SCOTUS, and constitutionality of the presidential succession acts providing for that elevation has questionable since the first one (1792). There would be a huge battle before a President Pelosi.

Pretty freaking funny, but not as funny as Pelosi becoming President. ? Now that was funny!!
