Former Vice President Joe Biden, a Catholic, was denied Holy Communion in a South Carolina church over his support for abortion.
Father Robert E. Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church, in Florence, said he denied the 2020 presidential candidate Holy Communion during Sunday morning’s services because of his stance on abortion, SC Now reported.
“Sadly, this past Sunday, I had to refuse Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden,” Morey told the newspaper via email. “Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church. Our actions should reflect that. Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching.”
The Biden campaign reportedly would not confirm he had attended the church but said if he did attend, it was in a private capacity.
And “let’s be clear,” Biden openly advocates for abortion, as seen in a recent tweet.
“Let’s be clear, this ban is dangerous and directly violates a woman’s constitutional right to choose. We must stop it. As president, I will codify Roe into federal law and ensure this choice remains between a woman and her doctor,” he tweeted.

More from SC Now on communion, for non-Catholics:
Communion is one of seven sacraments in the Roman Catholic Church. The others are baptism, reconciliation, confirmation, marriage, anointing of the sick and holy orders.
In communion, parishioners receive the Holy Eucharist, a wafer and wine that when consecrated become the body and blood of Jesus, according to Catholic doctrine. In order to receive it, a Catholic must be in the state of grace, have gone to confession since his or her most recent mortal sin, have a belief in the doctrine of transubstantiation (a belief that the wafer and wine become the body and blood of Jesus), observe the Eucharistic fast and not be under censure.
Morey explained to SC Now that as a priest, he has a responsibility to minister to those souls entrusted to his care and that he must do so in even the most difficult situations.
“I will keep Mr. Biden in my prayers,” the priest said.
Interestingly, Biden was the first Catholic to ever serve as vice president, and John F. Kennedy is the only Catholic to serve as president.
Life News reported in 2013 that Pope Francis sent a letter to the bishops of Argentina that said pro-abortion politicians should not be eligible for communion in the Catholic Church.
The letter said in part, “[people] cannot receive Holy Communion and at the same time act with deeds or words against the commandments, particularly when abortion, euthanasia, and other grave crimes against life and family are encouraged. This responsibility weighs particularly over legislators, heads of governments, and health professionals.”
“These are the guidelines we need for this time in history,” the pope told the bishops.
Earlier this year, the Roman Catholic bishop of Springfield banned leaders of the Illinois General Assembly from receiving Holy Communion at local churches because of their support for abortion legislation, the Associated Press reported.
Bishop Thomas John Paprocki based his action on Catholic canon stating those “who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”
“To support legislation that treats babies in the womb like property, allowing for their destruction for any reason at any time, is evil,” Paprocki said in a statement.
Vatican officials have said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., a Catholic who is a strong supporter of abortion, should be denied the Eucharist, according to the AP.
