Well, at least it’s not another recounting of a brave encounter with a gangster named Corn Pop.
2020 presidential hopeful Joe Biden is still telling the tale that he requested that former President Barack Obama not endorse him.
Biden appeared on Sunday’s “60 Minutes” and was asked by anchor Norah O’Donnell about why Obama has not backed his presidential run.
“Some have asked, why hasn’t President Obama endorsed you?” she said. “You guys served together for eight years.”
“Because I have to own — I wanna earn this on my own,” the former vice president replied.
“Did he offer to endorse you?” she pressed.
“No, we didn’t even get there. I asked him not to. He said, ‘Okay.’ I think it’s better — I think he thinks it’s better for me. I have no doubt when I’m the nominee he’ll be out on the campaign trail for me,” Biden said.
After Biden launched his 2020 presidential campaign bid in April, a statement from Obama spokeswoman Katie Hill said adding Biden to the ticket was “one of the best decisions” the former president ever made — but there was no endorsement.
Biden later told reporters that he’d asked Obama not to issue an endorsement.
“I asked President Obama not to endorse,” he said. “Whoever wins this nomination should win it on their own merits.”
Interestingly, after mentioning some of his gaffes in the recent Democratic debates, O’Donnell asked Biden about being up to the task of taking on President Trump.
“Some Democrats worry and wonder whether you’ll be fast enough on your feet, quick enough, to defend yourself against President Trump,” she said.
“What they’re really trying to make the case is about age,” Biden said. “And with age comes experience, with experience comes wisdom and with wisdom comes judgment.”
Philip Klein, the executive editor of the Washington Examiner, said in an editorial on Sunday if Biden wanted to “earn” the nomination without Obama’s endorsement, he wouldn’t be using Obama as a shield.
“It is, of course, impossible to believe that Biden wouldn’t want the official endorsement of a former president who is tremendously popular among Democrats,” Klein wrote. “But Biden’s claim is made even more ridiculous by the fact that he has been constantly deploying his relationship with Obama as a shield whenever he comes under fire from opponents.”
He reminded readers that Biden is “running as an elderly white man who has taken many positions over his nearly half-century-long political career that are at odds with a vocal segment of the modern Democratic Party.”
And Biden goes out of his way to associate himself with Obama at every opportunity, Klein asserted, going on to details multiple examples of this.
One of the more recent examples is seen below:

That is, when Biden can remember Obama’s name:

As progressive as Obama is, in today’s Democratic Party, the former president is not radical enough and sometimes comes under fire, but his popularity among the party base is still high, as Klein noted.
In the end, social media users are skeptical … on a positive note, Biden may have the endorsement of Corn Pop.
