When President Donald Trump recently derided his ostensibly Republican “Never Trump” political opponents as “human scum,” one “Never Trumper” took it personally.
That “Never Trumper,” CNN host S.E. Cupp, took it so personally, in fact, that she confronted newly signed network panelist Sean Duffy, a former GOP rep, over it Saturday evening. However, she refused to actually listen to much of what he had to say.
“I’ve known you for a while,” she said to the former Wisconsin congressman as their discussion began. “I like you. I know you are a stand-up guy, a family man. You teach your kids good value. Would you, sir, call me human scum?”
“Not the language I would use, but it’s not what did Donald Trump say, but why is he saying it?” Duffy replied, only to be cut off.

“I actually want to talk about what he said because he called people like me human scum,” Cupp angrily said. “Are you proud of the president for using that kind of language to describe people who disagree with him?”
“S.E., I don’t think you’re scum, and I know a lot of ‘Never-Trumpers,’ but I think the president is frustrated that he’s been investigated for two years,” Duffy replied, returning to the original point that he’d tried to convey only moments earlier.
“He’s fought to put American workers first, grow their wages, reduce their taxes, streamline regulations, all the things that you believe in, S.E., that you stood for, he’s done more than any other president and still people come out and bash him for it.”
It’s a point that’s been reiterated by conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh dozens of times since the president was elected to office three years ago.
Limbaugh was especially taken by surprise when fellow longtime “conservative” commentator George Will inexplicably began urging the American people to vote for Democrats in the midterm elections last year.
“Now, stop and think about that for a minute,” the radio show host said at the time. “That’s almost as off-the-wall as people on the left are off-the-wall. That’s in the midst of policies that all of these intellectual conservatives have ostensibly been fighting for their whole lives.”
“Trump is implementing much of what they have claimed to believe in. But maybe they didn’t believe it that much, because as it’s being implemented, they can’t bring themselves to support it because of the guy who is president while it’s happening. Vote Democrat? Give up the Supreme Court?”

This isn’t to suggest that the president hasn’t earned some justified criticism.
“Let’s talk about the things Republicans believe in,” Cupp noted. “We never used to defend protectionism. We never used to defend exploding the debt and the deficit. We never used to defend Russia, North Korea, Communist China.”
While the president has definitely adopted protectionism, it’s unclear when he’s ever defended the debt and deficit, let alone Russia and China, especially in light of the sanctions against the former and the tariffs against the latter.
As for “defending” North Korea, the argument could be made that Trump’s been trying to earn dictator Kim Jong Un’s trust.
But instead of acknowledging both the good and bad aspects of the Trump presidency, the “Never Trump” contingent of the Republican Party — think Joe Scarborough, Jennifer Rubin, and Max Boot, to name a few — have declared him bad from top to bottom and decided therefore that it’s better to just start embracing the Democrat Party.
Including the Democrat Party’s “witch hunts.” First, they bought into the since-debunked Russian collusion delusion conspiracy theory hook, line and sinker. And now they’ve just as eagerly embraced the Ukraine impeachment drive.
Meanwhile, a growing number of Americans in some swing districts oppose it.
“In Wisconsin, a poll just came out … of the Independent voters, 55 percent disagree with impeachment,” Duffy pointed out to Cupp. “Only 33 percent do. … People believe in fairness, and if you’re not fair to everybody, they push back against it. And that’s why they’re upset about Democrats having closed hearings.”

After spending a couple more minutes bickering over the specifics of the impeachment drive, Cupp and Duffy then turned their attention to Trump’s recent “civil war” comments.
“Trump has said there’s going to be a ‘civil war’ if he’s impeached,” the host said. “Do you think that’s true? Is that what you think of Trump supporters? That they would go to war against American citizens, their neighborhoods?”
“Republican voters, Trump supporters, are wildly angry he could be taken out by this sham of a process. They’re really angry,” Duffy replied.
“Is that a yes?” Cupp pressed.
“I don’t know if you’d have civil war where people are taking up guns, but I think you’d have a political civil war,” Duffy concluded.
