Trump uses Romney as perfect example of how GOP needs to ‘get tougher and fight’

President Donald Trump called for the Republican Party to “get tougher and fight” the Democratic Party’s partisan impeachment inquiry.

Any real hope of removing Trump from office ahead of the 2020 election hinges on a groundswell of desertions from weak-kneed Republicans and the media is doing all it can to stir talk of defections.

Speaking to reporters Monday at a Cabinet meeting, the president said the effort to remove him from office is a “phony investigation,” stressing it’s really about the 2020 election.

“Republicans have to get tougher and fight,” Trump said. “We have some that are great fighters, but they have to get tougher and fight because the Democrats are trying to hurt the Republican Party for the election, which is coming up, where we’re doing very well.”

He was straightforward on his thoughts of the Democratic Party, though he praised them for sticking together, taking a hard shot at Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, who has become more and more vocal in his criticism of the president.

“I think the Democrats fight dirty,” Trump said. “I think the Democrats are lousy politicians with lousy policy. They want open borders. They don’t care about crime.  They want sanctuary cities.  They don’t care about drugs.  They don’t care about almost anything.”

“The two things they have: They’re vicious and they stick together,” he added. “They don’t have Mitt Romney in their midst. They don’t have people like that.”

During an interview with The Atlantic, Romney admitted to having a second secret Twitter account and the accounts actions suggest that he was obsessed with hating on Trump, according to OANN’s Jack Posobiec.

In a stunning new ad this week, Trump unleashed an epic smackdown of Romney for attacking his decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria.

He called the failed 2012 GOP presidential nominee a “Democrat secret asset” who’s working with the left to undermine his presidency.

The video caption read: “REPUBLICANS MUST STICK TOGETHER AND FIGHT!”

The House Freedom Caucus is an example of Republicans fighting back.

Late Monday, the congressional caucus forced a vote on a resolution to censure Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., the House Intelligence Committee Chairman who is the party’s point person on impeachment.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, echoed the president’s concerns that impeachment is all about the upcoming election.

“This is about impeaching the president of the United States 13 months before an election because they’re afraid that he’s going to win in 2020,” Jordan told Fox News. “That’s what this is about.”

Trump also took a shot at “Never Trump” Republicans, the so-called “principled” opposition that would just as soon align with the opposition party than back Trump.

“Those people might be worse than the Democrats — the Never Trumpers,” he said.  “The good news is they’re dying off fast.  They’re on artificial respiration, I think.”

In addition to the Ukraine controversy, the president has come under fire from the interventionist wing of the GOP for his decision to pull troops out of northern Syria.

On that end, Trump stood his ground on getting the U.S. out of the endless wars in the Middle East.

“We’re bringing our troops back home. I got elected on bringing our soldiers back home,” the president said. “Now, it’s not very popular within the Beltway, because, you know, Lockheed doesn’t like it, and these great military companies don’t like it. It’s not very popular.”

When asked if it was a forgone conclusion the Democrat-led House will impeach him, Trump said, “Well, I think they want to. Any Democrat wants to because they’re not going to beat me in the election. So, of course, they want to impeach me.”

Some Republicans sided with Democrats to take issue with Trump’s decision to hold the next Group of Seven conference at his Doral golf resort in Florida — the president has since reversed course.

“You people with this phony emoluments clause,” Trump told reporters.

“The Democrats went crazy, even though I would have done it free, saved the country a lot of money,” he said. “Then they say, ‘Oh, but you’ll get promotion.’ Who cares? You don’t think I get enough promotion? I get more promotion than any human being that’s ever lived.”
