A Democrat U.S. congresswoman involved in two simultaneous extramarital affairs with staff members is wading into legal and ethical issues.

According to RedState, Rep. Katie Hill of California, currently in the process of a divorce, was involved in a two-year “throuple” (as in love triangle) relationship involving her husband and her young female staffer. The congresswoman subsequently went on to have an extramarital affair with her former finance director after moving to Washington, D.C. in January.

It’s important to note that there are potential national security implications in that Hill sits on the Armed Services Committee as well as the Committee on Oversight and Reform for which she is vice-chair. The RedState article stated: “If people who don’t have our nation’s best interests at heart had access to the photographs, text messages, and other information provided to RedState, Rep. Hill would be an easy blackmail target.”

When the staffer was brought into the alleged three-way throuple, she was a 22-year-old new college graduate. Hill and her husband Kenny Heslip were in their 30s. Further muddying the murk, the staffer was put on salary for Hill’s campaign organization. RedState pointed out that some legal experts “contend that an employee can’t truly consent to a sexual relationship with the person who signs their paycheck.”

This kind of story is not one that conservatives would often be comfortable with exposing as RedState has done, but the Salem Media site led off their exposé with this explanation:

Freshman Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA), Vice Chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, shared with Elle in a June 2019 interview a quote from the late Rep. Elijah Cummings, Chairman of the Committee “that has stuck with her.”

In one of those first meetings, Hill says, Cummings said something that has stuck with her. “It [was] that our role on Oversight is to get to the truth and to follow the truth wherever it leads us and to expose that for the American people,” Hill tells me over the phone. “To make sure that they have the information that they should have to, frankly, evaluate their government.”

It is in that spirit that we are sharing information obtained from multiple confidential sources relating to Rep. Hill.

The story includes images and texts that were provided to the publication, apparently by one of the spurned lovers. RedState indicated they chose not to publish more intimate images that were obtained showing the women.

In one of the published texts, the staffer asked Hill if she ended their relationship due to the “political risk.”

“No. I mean I guess maybe partially,” the congresswoman replied. “Honestly, though, it’s that I want to be alone. I don’t want to be accountable to anyone else. I want to be entirely focused on this work that I think is so important. And that’s not fair to anyone as a partner.

After Hill went to D.C. and ended the relationship with Heslip and the staffer, the husband heard from multiple sources that the congresswoman was in fact having an affair with Graham Kelly, formerly her finance director but now her legislative director.

At that point, Heslip filed for divorce.
