Lou Dobbs hammers once-silent George W. Bush for criticizing Trump’s Syria move

Fox Business Network’s Lou Dobbs called out former President George W. Bush for remarks seen as a rebuke of President Donald Trump’s foreign policy stance on Syria.

Coming from a man who remained silent for eight years as former President Barack Obama shoved his progressive agenda down the throats of Americans.

On Thursday’s edition of “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” Dobbs was railing against Republican lawmakers who failed to stand with Trump in his decision to withdraw from northern Syria — the move is a fulfillment of a campaign promise to get America out of endless wars in the  Middle East, a region beset with tribal conflicts going back centuries.

In what has been referred to as the “Trumpian view of the wider world,” the president rejects the belief that the U.S. should be “the world’s policeman,” choosing instead to be our own gatekeeper unless events directly impact American security. This does not sit well with the political class, which embraces an interventionist posture.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was among those Dobbs blasted, but he also had Bush in his sights.

“McConnell is not the only “RINO’ Republican to condemn the president’s decision,” the Fox Business Network host said. “Former President George W. Bush did as well.”

Noting that Bush was attending an event with former President Bill Clinton, Dobbs shared a quote from the Republican.

“An isolationist United States is destabilizing around the world. We are becoming isolationist and that’s dangerous for the sake of peace,” Bush was quoted as saying.

There’s no love lost between the Bush family and Trump with many people believing former Florida governor Jeb Bush would prevail after a bitter 2016 GOP primary. But ‘Jeb!’ proved to be no match for Trump, who tagged the younger Bush as “Low Energy Jeb.”

As for his older brother, many on the right were frustrated that he opted to remain on the sidelines during the contentious Obama years.

Bush responded to criticism over that decision to say former presidents shouldn’t undermine the present commander in chief.

Dobbs shared that quote: “I don’t think it’s good for the country to have a former president undermine a current president. I think it’s bad for the presidency for that matter.”

“That has changed, hasn’t it?” Dobbs concluded.

Ironically, after Obama withdrew from Iraq, it was Jeb Bush who said the decision to withdraw and not leave behind a residual force led to the creation of the Islamic State.

“That premature withdrawal was the fatal error, creating the void that ISIS moved in to fill — and that Iran has exploited to the full as well,” he said during a 2015 speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

Jeb was also critical of Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time.
