Women’s group calls on DNC to take stand, cancel debate on MSNBC unless NBC News ‘cleans house’

UltraViolet Action, a women’s advocacy group, is calling on the Democratic National Committee to cancel the fifth presidential debate because the event host has ties to NBC.

“The DNC needs to make it clear that they support survivors of sexual abuse and cancel the upcoming 2020 Democratic presidential primary debate on MSNBC until Comcast and NBC News take clear steps to clean up the toxic culture that exists across their networks,” Shaunna Thomas, the co-founder and executive director of UltraViolet Action, announced in a public statement on Tuesday.

The fifth Democratic presidential debate will be hosted by The Washington Post and MSNBC. NBC News and NBC Universal have been in hot water recently thanks to revelations in Ronan Farrow’s new book “Catch and Kill.”

Farrow’s reporting suggests that NBC may have been aware of sexual misconduct allegations against people like Matt Lauer far earlier than they let on. He also says his expose on disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein was originally killed by NBC because of the ties the network had to the man. NBC has denied these allegations.

“These initial reports demonstrate that NBC’s current leadership is either unable or unwilling to take appropriate steps to combat the culture of sexual abuse at the networks. These are problems that can only be solved by significant structural and cultural changes at MSNBC, NBC News, and its parent company, Comcast,” Thomas said.

“The DNC must stand with survivors and pull the upcoming democratic presidential primary debate from MSNBC until Comcast takes clear steps to clean house at NBC News,” she added.

The group has also called for the firing of Noah Oppenheim, the president of NBC News.

@DNC should pull the debate in Nov from @nbc until they demonstrate they’re taking this seriously. Clean house and do an independent investigation. Grateful to @RonanFarrow for exposing what is really happening to women inside NBC- especially wrt Noah Oppenheim and Phil Griffin,” Thomas tweeted on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for The Washington Post has confirmed to multiple outlets that the organization will still cosponsor the November Democratic presidential debate.

Many have taken to social media to call out NBC and the DNC and to support UltraViolet’s call to action.
