Ocasio-Cortez explains at town hall why American taxpayers should pay welfare for illegal immigrants

Radical socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explained to a crowd of supporters this week why every taxpaying American citizen should support allowing their money to be used to provide free welfare and other such services to both convicted felons and illegal aliens.

She made the remarks while speaking at a town hall event in her district on Thursday about two proposals she introduced in the House last month that she now argues are “next-level.”

Of the proposal to open welfare up to illegal aliens, she said, “It’s kind of a next-level piece of legislation, and it is something that people are going to say, ‘Why would you do that?’ I believe that we need to acknowledge the contributions that immigrants make in America.”

“And if you, if you, contribute to our society, I believe that you should benefit from our society,” she added.

Listen to the whole spiel below from beginning to end:

“The Mercy In Re-entry Act allows us to open all of our social safety nets and it ends federal discrimination on our social programs based on people who were formerly incarcerated,” she said at the beginning of the clip regarding her first proposal.

“And one reason that we do that is because one of the number one reasons for recidivism — why mass incarnation is such a persistent problem — is poverty. Is because people come out, and we refuse to extend opportunities to folks, so then we create so much economic isolation that people feel funneled right back to recidivism.”

“And then we’re incarcerating the same community over and over again. So The Mercy In Re-entry Act ends federal discrimination for the formerly incarcerated for our social safety net,” she continued.

Ocasio-Cortez then pivoted to her second proposal, The Embrace Act.

“And the Embrace Act, we are doing the same, and we’re ending — it’s a piece of legislation that ends similar discrimination based on documentation status. It’s kind of a next-level piece of legislation, and it is something that people are going to say, ‘Why would you do that?’ I believe that we need to acknowledge the contributions that immigrants make in America. And if you, if you, contribute to our society, I believe that you should benefit from our society.”

Both bills were problematic to many because, one, a large chunk of Americans believe in reducing the size of the welfare state, not increasing it. And two, an even larger chunk of Americans believe illegal aliens who’re living here in violation of the law deserve nothing.

It doesn’t help that, as it stands, illegal aliens are already receiving welfare because of loopholes that allow them to collect it through their U.S.-born anchor babies. Worse, illegal alien families reportedly collect more welfare on average than native families.

“According to the immigration control advocacy group, Center for Immigration Studies, which breaks down federal cost data from 2012, the welfare payout to likely illegal immigrant households averages $5,692 yearly, compared with the average $4,431 welfare payout to non-immigrant households collecting the benefit,” Newsmax reported in 2016.

“The CIS analysis study points out illegal immigrants are barred from directly receiving welfare, but may obtain it through their U.S.-born children.”

These findings themselves spurred plenty of outrage. And AOC’s plan to exacerbate the crisis by just opening the doors of the welfare office even wider appears to be triggering even more of it.

Case in point:

Just to be clear, despite false claims from Democrats and their media allies, the facts show that illegal aliens take more than they give.

According to a 2017 report from the left-leaning Institute on Taxation & Economic Policy, illegals paid roughly $11.7 billion in state and local taxes in 2014 alone. While that may seem like a lot, it pales in comparison to the amount spent on subsidizing their health care.

“All told, Americans cross-subsidize health care for unauthorized immigrants to the tune of $18.5 billion a year,” Chris Conover from the Center for Health Policy and Inequalities Research at Duke University revealed in a report last year.

Reports have likewise suggested that the total cost of illegal immigration runs as high as $113 billion a year.
