The Democratic Party’s renewed urgency to unseat President Donald Trump takes on a whole different meaning amid a report that Attorney General William Barr is indeed investigating the investigators.
A measure the party’s media allies are working feverishly to assign a sinister turn to, presenting the effort to get to the bottom of what may have been an effort to take out a sitting president as using executive branch powers to further personal interests.
The Washington Post reported Monday that Barr has been meeting with British and Italian intelligence officials regarding the investigation into the origins of the Russia collusion hoax.
Accompanying Barr in Italy was John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, who was tapped to investigate the events leading up to a long, exhaustive probe of Trump and his campaign.
As the Post noted, Barr told lawmakers in April he believed “spying did occur” when it came to the investigation of the Trump campaign.

Barr has already made overtures to British intelligence officials, and last week the attorney general traveled to Italy, where he and Durham met senior Italian government officials and Barr asked the Italians to assist Durham, according to one person familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue. It was not Barr’s first trip to Italy to meet intelligence officials, the person said. The Trump administration has made similar requests of Australia, said people who discussed the interactions on the condition of anonymity because they involve an ongoing investigation and sensitive talks between governments.
The New York Times reported on a recent phone call between Trump and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, where the president allegedly requested assistance in the ongoing Justice Department inquiry.
The Times cited an anonymous source, prompting speculation about whether Trump is still being spied on, as phone calls to foreign leaders are consistently being leaked.
White House spokesman Hogan Gidley was clear in saying the Democratic Party is fearful of the truth coming out — and perhaps over where it may lead, perhaps at the feet of Barack Obama.
“I’m old enough to remember when Democrats actually wanted to find out what happened in the 2016 election,” Gidley said. “The Democrats clearly don’t want the truth to come out anymore as it might hurt them politically, but this call relates to a DOJ inquiry publicly announced months ago to uncover exactly what happened. The DOJ simply requested the President provide introductions to facilitate that ongoing inquiry, and he did so, that’s all.”
It’s not as if President Trump wasn’t open about the need to look overseas, given that that’s where the whole sordid affair began.

Citing “current and former intelligence and law enforcement officials,” the Post said there was “frustration and alarm” over Barr “taking such a direct role in reexamining what they view as conspiracy theories and baseless allegations of misconduct.”
This being an attempt to control the narrative, but given the potential in unearthing what went down and who was involved, it’s understandable why there is alarm.
Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos explained in a tweet just why Italy matters, referencing Maltese academic Joseph Mifsud, a central figure in the Russian inquiry.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, appeared Monday night on Fox News’ “Hannity,” to denounce the outcry over Barr’s trip as just an attempt to shut his investigation down.
“Barr should be talking to Australia,” the lawmaker insisted. “He should be talking to Italy, the U.K. to find out if their intelligence services worked with our intelligence services improperly to open a counterintelligence investigation of Trump’s campaign.”

“If he’s not doing that, he’s not doing his job so I’m going to write a letter to all three countries and asking them to cooperate with Barr,” Graham said. “This is a letter sent by my Democratic colleagues in May of 2018 to the Ukraine saying that if you don’t cooperate with the Mueller investigation, we are going to stop our aid. Here’s what I want the American people to know. It’s okay to cooperate with Mueller to get Trump but it’s not okay to cooperate with Barr to find out if Trump was a victim of an out of control intelligence operation? We’re not going to have a country like that.”
The whole thing is beginning to read like the final chapter of the best spy novel ever written. Unfortunately for Americans, though, this is real life.
