A climate change protest outside a coal power plant in New Hampshire over the weekend led to a whopping 67 arrests. The protesters were calling for the plant to be shut down.
“We respect and support the right of any person to express his or her views,” Granite Shore Power said in a statement to WMUR about the arrests. “Unfortunately, today’s protest and trespassing was more about making a scene and breaking the law than about conveying an informed point of view.”
The specific coal power plant is Merrimack Station, which is one of five plants managed by Granite Shore Power.
A total of about 120 people showed up for the protest, according to the Bow Police Department.
While there were no injuries or property damage, the arrested protesters were charged with criminal trespassing.
“The Town of Bow would like to thank our local, county, regional and state partners for their assistance in ensuring that safety remained the top priority for our community, and all those who gathered at the Merrimack Station,” Bow Police Chief Margaret Lougee said.
“There’s a coalition of a lot of different organizations that are here today to shut down this power plant,” Sam Tardiff, of 350 New Hampshire Action and the New Hampshire Youth Movement, which staged the protest, said. “The time has come. It’s 2019. We shouldn’t be burning coal anymore.”
This climate change protest follows the United Nations’ Climate Action Summit where 16-year-old Greta Thunberg earned plenty of attention for her climate change activism and anti-Trump rhetoric.
“People are suffering, people are dying, entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth,” she said.
Her activism has already been revealed to be a little hypocritical and even greedy.
While speaking in New York at the climate change summit, Thunberg gave a speech where she seemed to be excusing not studying in school with concern for the environment.
“This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you have come to us young people for hope. How dare you? You have stolen my dreams, my childhood with your empty words,” she said.

Climate change protests seem to have risen in popularity with President Donald Trump in office as he is a supporter of coal and the jobs the industry provides — something protesters seem not at all concerned with.
“The last administration tried to shut down Pennsylvania coal and Pennsylvania fracking. If they got in, your fracking is gone. Your coal is gone. You guys, I don’t know what the hell you’re going to do. You don’t want to make widgets, right?” the president said in Pennsylvania last month.
