Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi claimed that Attorney General William Barr is “going rogue” and that she thinks he is involved in a “cover-up of the cover-up.”

In her first sit-down interview since her “impeachment inquiry” announcement on Tuesday, Pelosi spoke with MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough on Friday and repeatedly had a hard time expressing herself as she stumbled over her words.

But she did manage to accuse President Trump, the attorney general and the Department of Justice of breaking the law and covering it up. The alleged issue in question was a so-called cover-up of the president’s private call to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and a “whistleblower’s” secondhand claim that Trump exerted pressure on Zelensky to reopen the corruption investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

Scarborough asked Pelosi about the possibility that Attorney General Barr “buried” the whistleblower complaint that he was mentioned in.

“He’s going rogue,” said Pelosi.

“I think where they’re going is a cover-up of the cover-up,” she continued. “And that’s really very sad for them. And to have a Justice Department go so rogue, well, they had been for a while. And now it just makes matters worse that the attorney general was mentioned, that the president was mentioned, and yet the Justice Department directed the director of national intelligence to take this to the White House.”

“Which he said yesterday was unprecedented,” Scarborough interjected.

“Unprecedented. And he’s a person of great reputation,” Pelosi said about Barr. “I felt sorry for him because here is he having to not — I mean, just — I don’t know what. I think that what he did broke the law. The law is very clear. When this information comes, it’s deemed credible and of urgent concern by the inspector general. The director of national intelligence shall convey the information to Congress.”

“Now, this is my wheelhouse,” Pelosi claimed, “as I said to the president — 25 years of experience in intelligence, a long time ago starting as a member, being the ranking member, being gang of four even before I was in the leadership. I was there when we wrote the whistleblower laws. I was there when we wrote the law establishing the office of director of national intelligence. That’s only since 2004. ‘Shall convey that information to the Congress.’ And poor soul couldn’t.”

The “poor soul” Pelosi rather cryptically, and perhaps humorously, referred to was the whistleblower.

“And instead he took it to an attorney general who is mentioned as a possible part of the conspiracy,” said Scarborough.

“And a presidential — the president’s lawyers when the president was mentioned. Highly — not highly unusual, unique, wrong,” Pelosi concluded.

The Democrats’ efforts to bring down Trump via the Ukraine phone call controversy is doomed to fail. A transcript of the Trump-Zelensky conversation shows no improper influence being leveraged by Trump, and the whole “impeach now, sort it out later” approach by House Dems is more likely now to bring down any hopes they had for success in the 2020 elections.

It’s not unusual these days for Pelosi to falter and muddle through her speeches and interviews, and this MSNBC appearance was no exception. It’s a bit painful to watch and at times hard to follow, but clearly she is committed now to follow through with a “take no prisoners” impeachment effort, even as she and her cohorts are destined go down in flames.
