A college professor is claiming in a new book that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s popularity can be tied to “white rage and white supremacy.”
Kyle Kusz, a kinesiology professor at the University of Rhode Island, was inspired by a 2015 commercial starring Brady to write his new book “Making American White Men Great Again: Tom Brady, Donald Trump, and the Allure of White Male Omnipotence in Post-Obama America.”
The Under Armour commercial features thousands of Tom Bradys working out. The commercial tells the audience to “rule yourself.”
“I decided to research Trump and Brady’s public performances of their white masculinities and how they connect with broader debates about race and gender politics after a student in one of my classes brought the Under Armour commercial to my attention and it piqued my interest,” Kusz told Campus Reform about the commercial.
Kusz argues that the commercial “would not seem out of place in Leni Reifenstahl’s infamous Nazi propaganda film, ‘Triumph des willens.’”

Kusz is so obsessed with this vague connection between Brady and white supremacy that he has even researched who Brady spends time with off the football field. Kusz argues that Brady takes mostly white friends and players to the Kentucky Derby every year.
“It is a vision of Brady as a wealthy, white man who unapologetically enjoys, and has even made a habit out of, spending time with other wealthy white men who treasure time ‘with the boys’ over all others,” he said.
He added that this “suggests his performance of white masculinity shares much in common with President Trump’s” because most of the Derby’s attendees include elite white people.
He also notes that Brady’s refusal to be outspokenly anti-Trump — the two are reportedly friends — is how his “white masculinity is repeatedly constructed.”
That’s … a theory.
Another theory that could explain Brady’s popularity is the fact that he and coach Bill Belichick have created a sports dynasty football has never seen before.
Then there’s the six Super Bowl victories and three MVP awards.
Brady is also a 42-year-old athlete performing at a level no one at his age has ever performed at before.
These facts and more are conveniently ignored by Kusz is favor of his bizarre argument, which speaks more to possible Trump Derangement Syndrome than Brady’s nonexistent racism.
And as for the commercial, Brady has long been an advocate for fitness. He even published a book detailing his own fitness regime, which has kept him in shape at a time when most football players are beginning to deal with the negative effects of too much time on the field.
It appears to some that the professor is yet another leftist trying to shame Brady and the man’s legacy because the quarterback happens to be a friend of Trump’s. Though he is not very politically outspoken, some have slammed Brady for being pictured with a Make America Great Again hat in his locker.
Brady’s response? He keeps on winning on that field.
