The New York Times is facing a wave of calls to cancel subscriptions after the paper reported details on the identity of the Trump whistleblower.
The Times revealed Thursday that the source who exposed the alleged content of a telephone call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a male CIA officer who had previously been detailed to the White House.
(If true, it adds to a growing consensus that a faction of the intelligence apparatus in this country is openly hostile to this president.)
Dan Banquet, the executive editor of the N.Y. Times, defended the decision to release information on the whistleblower’s identity — in effect, to bolster his “credibility.”
“The president and some of his supporters have attacked the credibility of the whistle-blower, who has presented information that has touched off a landmark impeachment proceeding,” Banquet said on Thursday. “The president himself has called the whistle-blower’s account a ‘political hack job.’ We decided to publish limited information about the whistle-blower — including the fact that he works for a nonpolitical agency and that his complaint is based on an intimate knowledge and understanding of the White House — because we wanted to provide information to readers that allows them to make their own judgments about whether or not he is credible.”

This all coming as slow-witted Democrats like Florida state Rep. Carlos Smith were accusing Trump of doing what the Times had already done — the news cycle moves quick, Rep. Smith!

Speaking Thursday morning to a group of staff from the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Trump said this of his calls with foreign leaders being shared:
“I want to know who’s the person who gave the whistleblower the information because that’s close to a spy. You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart with spies and treason, right? We used to handle it a little differently than we do now.”
As for the “failing New York Times,” as Trump often calls the paper, the hashtag #CancelNYT began trending Thursday. Ironically, much of the criticism coming from the left — likely to include those concerned that the newspaper stymies future leaks on Trump.
