The New York Times is facing a wave of calls to cancel subscriptions after the paper reported details on the identity of the Trump whistleblower.
The Times revealed Thursday that the source who exposed the alleged content of a telephone call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a male CIA officer who had previously been detailed to the White House.
(If true, it adds to a growing consensus that a faction of the intelligence apparatus in this country is openly hostile to this president.)
Dan Banquet, the executive editor of the N.Y. Times, defended the decision to release information on the whistleblower’s identity — in effect, to bolster his “credibility.”
“The president and some of his supporters have attacked the credibility of the whistle-blower, who has presented information that has touched off a landmark impeachment proceeding,” Banquet said on Thursday. “The president himself has called the whistle-blower’s account a ‘political hack job.’ We decided to publish limited information about the whistle-blower — including the fact that he works for a nonpolitical agency and that his complaint is based on an intimate knowledge and understanding of the White House — because we wanted to provide information to readers that allows them to make their own judgments about whether or not he is credible.”

This all coming as slow-witted Democrats like Florida state Rep. Carlos Smith were accusing Trump of doing what the Times had already done — the news cycle moves quick, Rep. Smith!
“BREAKING: Trump wants to know who the whistleblower is and is openly trying to intimidate them publicly. Retaliation against a whistleblower is a violation of the WhistleBlower Act,” the openly gay Democrat tweeted.

Speaking Thursday morning to a group of staff from the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Trump said this of his calls with foreign leaders being shared:
“I want to know who’s the person who gave the whistleblower the information because that’s close to a spy. You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart with spies and treason, right? We used to handle it a little differently than we do now.”
As for the “failing New York Times,” as Trump often calls the paper, the hashtag #CancelNYT began trending Thursday. Ironically, much of the criticism coming from the left — likely to include those concerned that the newspaper stymies future leaks on Trump.
Here’s a sampling of some of the responses from Twitter:
Our country’s heroes are worth far more than clicks and views. Doxxing the whistleblower endangers the individual’s life, which is especially heinous considering the whistleblower went through proper government channels. The NYT protects Trump sources better than this. #CancelNYT

This is no reason. There is no reason for doing this except to sell papers and brag about being important . The NYT will destroy the whistleblower’s life, and they have no right to do that. #FireDeanBaquet #CancelNYT

Do you have any idea what it’s like trying to be a decent person and worrying every day that your name will be published and people will hurt you and your family, @nytmike ? Do you? This person is a hero. You have no right to push him and his family into harm’s way? #CancelNYT https://t.co/CicaHzm8qQ

The public is smart enough to read the whistle blower’s report and conclude it is legitimate. Cancelling my subscription tomorrow morning. The whistleblower & their family will pay dearly for this. Hopefully not with their lives as Trump suggested to his followers. #CancelNYT

Extremely disappointed in the New York Times for possibly placing the whistleblower in grave danger and likely deterring other people from coming forward with valuable information against Trump. #CancelNYT https://t.co/ILss6NmZOD

What part of “whistleblower” does @nytimes not understand? Dangerous. #CancelNYT

Exposing identifying details about the whistleblower is the equivalent of exposing a confidential news source. There is NO excuse for this. Cancel via email, and explain why. Unsubscribe@nytimes.com. Put “Cancel my subscription” in the subject line. #CancelNYT #CancelNYTimes
