It’s difficult to find a positive in the death of a distraught Bronx dad who jumped in front of a subway train while holding his 5-year-old daughter, but the one thing that stands as a miracle is that the young girl survived.
Almost unscathed… at least, physically.
The troubled man, Fernando Balbuena, 45, was at the Kingsbridge Road subway station Monday morning and leaped onto the track while holding his daughter as a train approached, Fox News reported.
Balbuena was killed, but his young daughter escaped virtually unscathed — the girl was caught on video crawling along the trackbed to the outstretched arm of a good Samaritan who had jumped down to rescue her.
The chilling final words from Balbuena before jumping to his death are now known, according to the man’s wife: “With God, with God, with God, here comes the train.”
He was on the phone with his wife, Niurka Caraballo, at the fateful moment, saying in Spanish, “Con Dios, con Dios, con Dios que alli viene el tren.”
“They [witnesses] speculate he was fighting with someone on the phone, but the only person he was on the phone with was me,” Caraballo said, according to Fox News.
She said her husband had a history of depression but said Balbuena was taking medication and that his actions Monday were stunning.
“My husband is a serious man, responsible, quiet and reserved,” Caraballo said. “He was in treatment, he took his medication. We are all in shock.”

As for the young girl, the mother said she was fine from a physical standpoint, before adding that her daughter has still not processed the traumatic event she went through.
The girl, Ferni, asks for her father and expects him to walk through the door at any moment.
“Ferni was very close to him,” Caraballo said. “After what happened, she is saying, ‘Daddy is in the hospital. He hurt his stomach.’”
The mother is grateful that her daughter is alive after the near-death experience.
“It is going to be a process, her living through that,” she said. “They are calling her the miracle girl. My daughter was reborn yesterday.”
Below is another angle of the young girl being rescued from under the subway train.
INCREDIBLE. So happy this little girl is okay, physically (emotionally scarred, I’m sure).
