Threat of border shutdown blamed on illegals surge: 14.3 million

According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the illegal immigrant population in the United States has surged to an astounding 14.3 million, which is a 2 million increase in the last two years. They further predict that inaction on immigration policies and border protection will facilitate a further increase of 21 million aliens in a mere 6 years.

They cite possible reasons for the sudden increase as being “lax laws, promises of sanctuary, and a growing threat to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border,” according to the Washington Examiner.

FAIR President Dan Stein believes that we have “entered a new phase of the ongoing phenomenon of illegal immigration.”

“In the past, Mexico dominated the flow of illegal immigration and most of the illegal migrants apprehended at our borders were promptly repatriated. Now, as a result of easily exploited policies, and intense partisan bickering in Washington that prevents even the most common sense reforms to those abused policies, migrants from just about everywhere on Earth are crossing the border and staying put.”

The organization also reported that as the illegal alien population explodes, so too does that cost to American taxpayers.

They suggest that illegal immigrants will cost the country a grand total of $130B this year alone, and that the cost will only skyrocket as more and more people run across our border, largely incentivized by liberal rhetoric and promises of lax immigration law.

If the population blows up to 21 million as they predict, the estimated cost will bloat to a massive $200B, including “[c]osts for federal, state, and local governments range from security, to free healthcare, and education of undocumented immigrants.”

Their overall call for action was aimed at President Trump, who they say must do something about the lawlessness at the southern border, lest we face the impending disaster they foresee.

“Without action in Washington to secure the border and curb the abuses of our humanitarian policies, the dramatic increase in the illegal alien population and the commensurate dramatic increases in costs to U.S. taxpayers will continue unabated,” said Stein.

“After years of the needle being stuck at 11 million illegal residents, the new data suggest that, unless we change course, we will continue to see rapid growth of the illegal alien population,” he added.

In calculating their numbers, FAIR used US Census Bureau information and adjusted for those who do not fill out government surveys.

It is likely that pro-immigration groups will attempt to refute these numbers and downplay the economic impact of mass undocumented immigration, says Matthew J. O’Brien, FAIR’s research director.

“Many pro-mass migration organizations do not want Americans to know just how big our illegal alien problem really is. Therefore, in order to minimize the problem, they engage in all manner of mathematical gymnastics to produce illegal alien population estimates that they see as ‘tolerable, to the bulk of American society,” he stated.
