Dobbs: Disgraceful GOP Sen. Mike Lee pushes job-stealing Green Card bill

Fox Business host Lou Dobbs has gone after Utah Sen. Mike Lee for supporting a bill that would lift per-country gaps on permanent residency. The bill was ultimately blocked in the Senate.

Dobbs described the bill as an “absolute dream” for outsourcers on “Lou Dobbs Tonight.” The bill is called the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act.

“It would remove green card limits on workers from other countries,” said Dobbs, “but what that means is big countries like India and China principally would overwhelm the H1B visa list, and guess what? They would be taking American jobs at lower pay, historically 27 percent lower than prevailing wages in the United States for American labor.”

Though the bill was blocked, it still has support. Georgia Senator David Perdue has said he wants to reintroduce the bill after some of the language in it has been worked on. He claims the bill keeps in line with President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda. Dobbs is not buying into the hype though.

“Ask yourself: why would a populist president who has worked so hard for the American worker, the middle class, the forgotten man and woman in this country, agree to such a bunch of nonsense?” said Dobbs.

Perdue objected to unanimous consent for the bill. The bill is a version of something that already passed the House in July with a 365-65 vote.

Rand Paul previously blocked the bill and said it could have negative effects on specific industries. The Kentucky senator was worried primarily about the nursing field. The new bill would increase wait times for foreign nurses. He wanted a provision added that would allow 5000 nurses to get temporary work visas in the United States annually. The original version of the bill would have increased wait times for foreign nurses, many of whom come from the Philippines.

Since Paul practices ophthalmology and has an extensive background in the medical field, it’s easy to see why he would be concerned about this specific detail.

The bill, co-introduced by Kamala Harris, is meant to take care of the backlog of green card candidates from places like China and India. On top of erasing a cap for employment green cards, it would also raise the cap for family-based green cards. Some green card applicants from China have been waiting over 10 years and some from India have been waiting almost just as long.

The bill is considered highly beneficial to Silicon Valley, which heavily relies on high-skilled foreign labor.

What is most interesting about the Lee bill is that it is the rare piece of policy that is currently gaining bipartisan support. Though lawmakers like Paul have small problems, the bill is very likely to pass the Senate in the near future.

What is up for debate is whether the bill keeps in line with the current immigration policies being pushed by the Trump administration. Dobbs disagrees, and he is a strong supporter of the president and his policies, but it’s unlikely conservatives like himself will have the last word on this matter.
