File this in stories beyond the weird: A woman in Louisiana clenched her teeth in determination last week when she found herself being crushed by a 600-pound camel.

What did she do? She bit the animal’s testicles to free herself, of course.

On Thursday a Florida woman at the Tiger Truck Stop in Gross Tete, Louisiana, followed her deaf dog into a petting zoo enclosure that contained a camel named Caspar. The woman and her husband spooked Caspar before the camel pinned the woman against a wall and sat on her.

“She said, ‘I bit his balls to get him off of me, I bit his testicles to get him off of me,’” Iberville Parish Deputy Louis Hamilton Jr. told The Advocate.

The woman was taken to a hospital and her condition is unknown.

The camel did not suffer serious injuries.

Police indicated that their investigation into the incident found the unidentified woman and her husband were at fault and provoked the animal. “The woman’s husband had been throwing treats to their dog under Caspar the camel’s fence Thursday evening before the dog went inside, the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office said Sunday,” reported The Advocate. “After the dog began interacting with the camel, the couple crawled in to get it, officials said. While inside, the camel sat on the woman and she bit the animal.”

“The camel did nothing wrong,” Deputy Hamilton said. “They (the couple) were aggressive. The camel was just doing its normal routine.”

The truck stop has not been cited for any malfeasance because Caspar was well enclosed in a fenced area that included a double strand of barbed wire with signs every ten feet warning visitors to stay out.

“The camel has never been aggressive, the camel has never gotten out, never caused any issues — in fact, the husband and wife stated before that ‘we’ve been here before and we’ve never had any problems,’” Hamilton said.

Police said the husband had been throwing dog treats into the camel enclosure to get the dog to enter, before the couple subsequently went in to try to retrieve the dog.

According to The Advocate, “Deputies cited the couple for a leash law violation and criminal trespassing. State laws prohibit people from letting their dogs run free on enclosed or unenclosed private property.”

Truck stop manager Pamela Bossier said that after the couple went in, crawling under the barbed wire at the bottom of the fence, the man pushed and shoved the camel and swatted the animal with his hat. At that point, the camel became upset, said Bossier.

“Any animal you provoke, they’re going to strike back,” she said. “It’s instinct.”

She defended the 18-month-old Caspar, saying the animal has never caused any issues before. “He’s really a gentle giant,” Bossier said.

Michael Sandlin, owner of Tiger Truck Stop, said he intends to continue bringing in more animals to build a bigger petting zoo on his property. At this point, the public exhibit includes a baby kangaroo, a miniature horse, and a coati, in addition to Caspar.
