Melania Trump is set to ring the opening bell Monday on Wall Street as part of a tour of the New York Stock Exchange and parents of students attending the United Nations International School received a notice asking children to join the first lady, according to the New York Daily News.
And while the visit should be seen as the opportunity of a lifetime for young children, something they can tell their grandchildren about years from now, a few petty parents are concerned about their children being used as political props.
A letter was reportedly sent to a UN undersecretary-general taking the school to task for accepting the White House invitation to have children accompany Mrs. Trump.
A single parent is quoted in the article, which does not indicate how many parents signed onto the letter — the anonymous parent told the newspaper there were others.
“I am profoundly disappointed by the decision to accept this invitation,” said the unnamed parent.
Only 10 students from the school are expected to be chosen for the trip — the UNIS is the school of the United Nations, and provides a pre-K-to-12th-grade curriculum and a college-preparatory program, as noted by the Daily News.
Among the letter’s expressed concerns was the students’ “appearance together with the First Lady confers, by extension, on this U.S. administration, the endorsement of our school and our community.”
Listed as a private school, it’s not clear if any funding comes from the United States. However, the U.S. is the largest financial contributor to the UN, with 22 percent of its entire budget in 2017 coming from U.S. taxpayers.
“The sentiment is extremely strong,” the parent wrote.
To get an indication of what comes with the territory when it comes to a UN school, the letter included a reminder that school administrators organized grief counseling after President Trump won the 2016 election, to include special activities to help the students “cope with the shock,” the Daily News reported.
But then, Melania Trump is used to such pettiness, be it from the media – which clamors to snap photographs of her with a sullen look on her face to interpret what she might be thinking – or the way she is all but ignored by the fashion industry – even though the graceful first lady is a former model.
This being the same fashion industry that gushed over her predecessor, former first lady Michelle Obama, plastering her on one magazine cover after another.
While many online responses are too toxic to share, with liberals allowing their hatred to get the better of them, Mrs. Trump did have plenty of support — after all, the role of the first lady has traditionally been non-political.
