Cultiva Espresso & Crepe was forced to fire transgender employee Natalie Weiss after she cursed at a conservative patron over political differences.
Marilyn Synek walked into the shop on Wednesday, likely expecting to get her coffee and be on about her way. What she likely wasn’t expecting was Weiss’ sudden hatred and anger.
Synek, who works for the Nebraska Family Alliance supporting pro-life policies and religious freedom, was apparently recognizable to Weiss for the group’s recent work in opposing protections for LGBT individuals at work and in public spaces. Weiss had reportedly supported the law, though it was shot down, which she claims caused her “personal stress.” Is was this frustration, she claims, that prompted her to lash out in the vulgar, unprofessional manner that precipitated her firing.
“I thought I recognized you,” snarled Weiss. “You should get the f*** out and never come back.” It was also reported that Weiss went on to call Synek “bigoted trash” and not “f***ing wanted” in the cafe.
“Right there, sitting there was the face of an organization that has been the source of a great deal of personal stress,” Weiss said, explaining her crude outburst.
While she admits that her words were “vulgar” and unprofessional, Weiss was not expecting to be fired from Cultiva.
“We were told we were allowed to ask anyone who make us feel uncomfortable and unsafe to leave, so I felt empowered to do what I did,” she claimed. “The soft, unspoken caveat was that the people had to make us feel uncomfortable while we were working, not outside of the shift.”
She then attempted to spin the whole situation by downplaying her vitriol, by implying that all she did was tell Synek to “get lost.”
“So, for those keeping track, in Nebraska, you can be fired or lose your home because you identify as LGBTQ+, and you can also be fired for telling people who fight for that status quo to get lost,” she said.
Weiss also compared this incident to others involving religious owners who politely decline to participate in the weddings of homosexual customers. The difference is, the owners don’t curse at and insult the couple, they simply cite sincerely-held religious beliefs. Weiss also tried to pin the blame for her firing and the subsequent “firestorm” on Synek, as if it was her fault the unruly employee couldn’t control her mouth and temper.
“The Nebraska Family Alliance always tells gay people to go get their wedding cakes at another shop if one won’t serve them, so why couldn’t Synek go to another shop instead of starting a firestorm within 24 hours?” Weiss asked, unaware of the fundamental differences between calling someone “bigoted trash” and simply saying “no thank you.”

“Weiss said she understood that the interaction was “unprofessional” and that while she expected to be reprimanded by Cultiva’s management, she was not expecting to be fired.”
Lot of people would call this thought process ‘privilege.’

Democrat here. No problem with gay people, had two gay roommates in the past. If my employee yelled obscenities at a customer, no matter the politics involved, I’d fire them too.
Why wasn’t the headline “Intolerant Employee Fired for Verbal Abuse of Customer”?
