President Donald Trump told a joke about energy-efficient light bulbs this week. And in response, the media, congressional Democrats and Hollywood celebrities pounced, with many again making the mistake of mistaking his jokes for serious remarks.
While speaking at the 2019 House Republican Conference Member Retreat Dinner this Thursday evening in Baltimore, Maryland, the president specifically quipped that energy-efficient light bulbs make him look orange.

“[T]he bulb that we’re being forced to use — number one, to me, most importantly, the light is no good. I always look orange. And so do you,” he joked while speaking about being forced to use energy-efficient bulbs because of regulations enacted by the Obama administration.
“The light is the worst. But number two, it’s many times more expensive than that old incandescent bulb that worked very well. And very importantly — I don’t know if you know this — they have warnings. If it breaks, it’s considered a hazardous waste site. Its gasses inside.”
He added that going forward, consumers will be allowed to choose for themselves which light bulbs they prefer — traditional incandescent bulbs or modern energy-efficient ones.
That, in fact, is the very point of his administration rolling back Obama’s regulations — to empower the American people by allowing their demands, not government intervention, to shape the light bulb industry and determine its future.
But sadly, this point flew right over the heads of many on the left.
“President Donald Trump on Thursday evening claimed that energy-efficient light bulbs make him look orange, one in a series of bizarre claims about green energy and climate conservation in remarks to Republican House members in Baltimore,” CNN reported Friday.
*facepalm*
If only CNN were alone, but no, it wasn’t. A slew of decidedly left-wing media outlets chose to focus their reports on the president’s JOKE versus the point he’d been trying to convey.

In fairness to the media, most of them appeared to just report the president’s comments verbatim without adding any unnecessarily inflammatory or deranged commentary.
Democrats, on the other hand …
“In any light, President Trump’s view on climate looks dangerous,” Colorado Sen. Michael Bennett tweeted in response to the president’s joke.
Really?
The reactions from Hollywood celebrities were similarly gloomy and serious.

So was there anyone who responded to the president’s joke in a sane, non-deranged manner? Yes, though it may surprise you to learn who this person happens to be;
CNN’s Anderson Cooper! As in the same Anderson Cooper who’s practically a registered member of the so-called “Resistance” against the president.
As part of his weekday “Ridiculist” segment, on Friday the host responded to the president’s joke by trolling him right back in an admittedly fun, fair and self-deprecating fashion.
“Tonight we’re talking about a real battle of wits and wants as President Trump wages a new war against that most pernicious of public enemies, the light bulb,” he said. “Yeah, I said it. Y’all don’t have the bulbs to report it, but I do. So does Trump.”
“We’re talking nasty, politically correct, socialist light bulbs. Speaking last night at a Republican retreat in Baltimore, America’s next top electrician suggested the current crop of energy-efficient bulbs are to blame for his personal gold-plated glow.”
After playing a clip of the president speaking about energy-efficient bulbs, Cooper continued by praising him for finally admitting the truth about himself.
“Well, this might be the first time I’ve heard the president acknowledge that he looks orange. … Frankly, I’m glad he did,” he said. “It’s sort of a relief. It’s like acknowledging the 1,000 pound Clementine in the room.”
“I wouldn’t have ever brought it up myself — I don’t like to riff on someone’s physical appearance, unless it’s my own translucent death-like pallor and I can work in the phrase ‘steely blue eyes’ — but I do give props to President Trump for acknowledging and seemingly poking fun at his orange glow.”
