Bret Baier calls 70% chance Pompeo’s about to run for US Senate

Fox News host Bret Baier suspects that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo may run for a Senate seat in Kansas. In fact, he believes there’s a 70 percent chance this will happen.

He admitted as much after being asked by fellow network host Dana Perino early Friday afternoon about the secretary’s latest dismissal of speculation that he may run.

“Do you think Secretary Pompeo will run for Senate in Kansas … He doesn’t have to make a decision right away, but it does feel like the chatter’s getting loud,” Perino asked.

“So if I was playing candidate casino with $100 in chips, I’d say 70/30 Pompeo runs for Senate,” Baier replied.

“I’d put 90/10,” Perino said before the discussion concluded.

The brief discussion was prompted by remarks Pompeo made during an interview with The Wichita Eagle that was put out earlier that morning.

The interviewer had pointed out that Pompeo’s been visiting Kansas a lot lately, and that these frequent visits have “helped fuel speculation that you are maybe interested in Pat Roberts’ Senate seat.”

“I’ve said consistently since this set of conversations came up that I’m focused on what I’m doing,” the secretary replied. “I intend to remain America’s secretary of state as long as President Trump wants me to do that. Every day I’m focused on my mission. That’s what I do.”

The interviewer wasn’t convinced.

“That doesn’t exactly sound definitive,” the interviewer said.

“You can take it however you’d like,” Pompeo replied. “I hear all the speculation. There’s a lot of people thinking about my future a lot more than I am. I spend my days focused on delivering American foreign policy around the world, every hour, every day. That’s what I’m doing. I never vary from that.”

The interviewer then asked whether he’s spoken to President Donald Trump about a potential run.

“I never talk to anybody about private conversations I have with the president,” he replied. “Look, I see the noise. I see all the talk. All I can tell the American people and the people of Kansas is we love this place. But my mission’s that I get this privilege to be America’s secretary of state.”

He continued, “I’m the 70th secretary of state. I intend to do this just as long as President Trump will give me this incredible privilege and every day I will work to deliver security for the American people as America’s most senior diplomat.”

That being said, if perhaps Pompeo were to run, he certainly wouldn’t be a newbie. From 2011 to 2017, he served as a member of the House.

“Prior to joining the Trump Administration, Mr. Pompeo was serving in his fourth term as congressman from Kansas’ 4th District,” the secretary’s White House biography reads. “He served on the House Intelligence Committee as well as on the Energy and Commerce Committees, as well as the Energy and Commerce Committee and House Select Benghazi Committee.”

When he first ran for office back in 2011, he did so with a vow to bring Kansas values to Washington.

“Mike is an intelligent, hard-working Kansan who understands business issues critical to economic growth in the 4th District,” then-state Rep. Marc Rhoades, one of his backers, said at the time. “His knowledge of the relationship between the private sector, limited government and fiscal responsibility — as well as his military service to our country — makes him a well-defined candidate who will bring conservative Kansas values and leadership to Washington.”

After stepping down in 2017 to assume the role as the CIA’s next director, another Republican, Ron Estes, won a special election for his seat and then the 2018 midterm election.

Regarding the president’s decision to assign him to the CIA, it may have stemmed in part from Pompeo’s impressive military experience.

“Mr. Pompeo graduated first in his class at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1986 and served as a cavalry officer patrolling the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall,” his biography notes. “He also served with the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry in the US Army’s Fourth Infantry Division.”

But according to National Italian American Foundation co-chairs Patricia De Stacy Harrison and Gabriel A. Battista, he didn’t just serve America — he served it well.

“Mike Pompeo has an extraordinary record of service to this country,” Harrison said in a statement following his confirmation as secretary of state last year.

“He is a leader who has succeeded in business, the military and government,” Battista added. “And he is a proud Italian American.”

It was in 2018 that the president went ahead and switched him out of the CIA and over to the State Department — with the backing of numerous Republicans.

“In selecting CIA Director Mike Pompeo as his nominee for Secretary of State, the president has called upon a brilliant, tough-minded leader to guide our diplomatic corps through challenging days ahead,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said at the time. “I have every confidence in Mike. He has earned the trust of the career officers at the CIA, and I am certain he will be an excellent Secretary of State.”

Then-House Speaker Paul Ryan agreed, saying, “I welcome my good friend, Mike Pompeo, as the next Secretary of State. Mike is razor-sharp, a dedicated patriot, and possesses the type of experience that makes him an outstanding choice to be our next top diplomat.”
