Mattis: Obama whitewashed devastating Iran bomb plot on D.C. ground to spare nuclear deal

The media has been quick to give former Defense Secretary James Mattis a platform to plug his new book, anticipating that the Marine Corps general might give up some dirt on his ex-boss, President Donald Trump.

But it appears that the book, “Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead” — the clever title is not related to Mattis’ time with Trump — is more detrimental to the media’s messiah, former President Barack Obama, than the current 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. occupant.

Mattis served as commander of U.S. Central Command in the Obama administration and was insistent that Iran was the bigger threat America faced. He said in his book that the former president effectively downplayed an Iran bomb plot in Washington so that it would not harm his prized nuclear deal with the world’s leading sponsor of terror.

In fact, Mattis said he was not even informed when Iran committed an “act of war” on American soil.

“From my first day at CENTCOM, I knew we faced two principal adversaries: stateless Sunni Islamist terrorists and the revolutionary Shiite regime of Iran, the most destabilizing country in the region,” he said, according to the Washington Examiner. “Iran was by far the more deadly of the two threats.”

(Mattis said he was eventually fired by Obama over his persistent warnings about Iran.)

Two Iranians were arrested in October 2011, charged with planning to bomb Cafe Milano, an upscale DC restaurant that Saudi Arabia’s ambassador, Adel al-Jubeir, was known to frequent.

“Attorney General Eric Holder said the bombing plot was ‘directed and approved by elements of the Iranian government and, specifically, senior members of the Qods Force.’ The Qods were the Special Operations Force of the Revolutionary Guards, reporting to the top of the Iranian government,” Mattis says in the book.

He also said he “saw the intelligence: we had recorded Tehran’s approval of the operation.”

The general was adamant the attack, if successful, “would have changed history.”

“Had the bomb gone off, those in the restaurant and on the street would have been ripped apart, blood rushing down sewer drains,” he wrote. “It would have been the worst attack on us since 9/11. I sensed that only Iran’s impression of America’s impotence could have led them to risk such an act within a couple of miles of the White House, Absent one fundamental mistake — the terrorists had engaged an undercover DEA agent in an attempt to smuggle the bomb — the Iranians would have pulled off this devastating attack. Had that bomb exploded, it would have changed history.”

But he said Obama “was not interested” in his thoughts on a proper response to the ongoing provocation from Iran.

“We treated an act of war as a law enforcement violation, jailing the low-level courier,” Mattis said.

He went on to suggest that Obama was more interested in ongoing negotiations that would eventually produce the one-sided Iran nuclear deal President Trump rejected after taking office.

“But there was a reason for the administration’s restraint,” Mattis wrote. “The administration was secretly negotiating with Iran, although I was not privy to the details at the time.”

And with juicy details like that being uncovered in the book, along with an assessment that former Vice President Joe Biden, who is now running for president, was “ignoring reality” in being responsible for Iraq policy, it’s understandable if the media enthusiasm for the book has diminished somewhat, as suggested online.

Jim Hanson, president of Security Studies Group, tweeted: “The #Mattis book has been dropped faster than a Trump hat by the media/Left It has plenty of Presidential malpractice But by Obama & that is heresy The truth hurts.”
