Guy pulls gun at Houston Popeyes, demands sold-out chicken sandwich

Popeye’s fried chicken restaurant chain had the business savvy to produce a new chicken sandwich and throw it up against rival Chick-fil-A’s famously good chicken sandwich in what has proven to be a spirited competition on social media.

What Popeye’s didn’t do as good a job of is preparing for the demand brought on by the notoriety, as many of the restaurants have been running out of the product amid large crowds.

One such incident this week resulted in a mob that stormed a Houston Popeye’s in search of the sandwich pulling a gun when they were sold out.

“Male pulled a gun on employees of restaurant after they ran out of chicken sandwich,” the Houston Police Department said in a tweet posted late Monday evening.

A group of people visited the restaurant and became upset when told they were out of chicken sandwiches, with one man pulling a weapon, according to HPD Lt. Larry Crowson.

“When the manager told them they were out, one of the males became upset and pulled a pistol and demanded a chicken sandwich,” Crowson said. “The manager again informed them they were out of sandwiches.”

The mob consisted of two women, three men and a baby, according to KTRK-TV.

Running out of the new sandwich prompted an East Ridge, Tenn., man to file a civil summons against Popeyes, WTVC reported.

After repeated trips to the fast food restaurant, only to find each time that they were out of the popular sandwich, Craig Barr sued for “false advertising, deceptive business practices by entity to public.”

He’s asking for $5,000 in damages.

“Countless time wasted driving to and from Popeyes. No chicken sandwich. Was told to come back this day- still no sandwich,” an unhappy Barr said in his complaint.

Adding to his woes, Barr says he was ripped off while trying to buy a black market sandwich.

According to the ABC affiliate, he answered a “black list” Craigslist ad, promising a Popeyes worker who worked the fryer would “stash” some sandwiches and sell them for $24.

Barr said he paid the steep fee, but never received the chicken sandwich,

Despite all the hubbub and sell outs, Popeye’s is reveling in the sudden popularity: “Y’all. We love that you love The Sandwich. Unfortunately we’re sold out (for now),” read a tweet posted last week.

While there’s nothing funny about a gun being pulled, social media users had a blast over the ridiculousness of the story — hey, sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.
