On any given weekend, Chicago casualties can rival that of the latest mass shooting, even though it’s widely known that the city has some of the strictest gun laws in the country.
Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot doesn’t appreciate her city being used as a shining example of how strict gun laws do little to prevent gun violence.
And while her angst is not intense enough to change the failed policies employed in the Windy City, Lightfoot will lash out at elected leaders who highlight the obvious.
People like Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who proffered the novel concept of protecting citizens from violent criminals in responding to a tweet from Breitbart News noting that “25 people were shot, seven fatally, during the first half of Labor Day Weekend” in Chicago.
This coming after the shooting in Odessa, Texas, by a troubled man who reportedly had been on a “downward spiral” and was just been fired from his job, that claimed seven lives.
“Gun control doesn’t work. Look at Chicago,” Cruz tweeted. “Disarming law-abiding citizens isn’t the answer. Stopping violent criminals — prosecuting & getting them off the street — BEFORE they commit more violent crimes is the most effective way to reduce murder rates. Let’s protect our citizens.”

Lightfood, the city’s first openly-gay mayor, responded by popping off online about “coward Republicans,” telling Cruz: “Keep our name out of your mouth.”
Displaying statistics that show most guns recovered are from outside Illinois, the radical left-wing mayor tweeted: 60% of illegal firearms recovered in Chicago come from outside IL—mostly from states dominated by coward Republicans like you who refuse to enact commonsense gun legislation. Keep our name out of your mouth.”

The reaction to the Texas shooting from 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden was to call for the “elimination” of assault-style rifles like the AR-15 and a ban on magazines that hold more than a single bullet.
Fellow candidate Beto O’Rourke even called for a “mandatory” — see forced — buy back of these weapons by the government. The last time guns were confiscated in America, King George issued the order.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to Lightfoot from Twitter:
If the problem is illegal guns, then why are those Republican states not high on crime like Chicago?
The true problem is the lack of morals and family values. In chicago, those things have been replaced by high taxation and welfare.
Objects are not the issue.

This response doesn’t make sense to me. Even if the guns come from outside Chicago, the ppl who illegally use them CHOSE to GO get them from outside. Criminals will obtain weapons anyway they can. Stats on where they come from doesn’t negate they ARE being sought/illegally used

Who are the people doing the shooting?
Stop blaming everyone else for Chicago’s problems.— KAM (@KAMbot1138) September 3, 2019
“Keep our name out of your mouth“—- Wow. Beyond nasty. I guess the warm and fuzzy Lori Lightfoot of the Media is a myth.

Right, but somehow those out of state locations don’t have nearly the gun violence that Chicago has. (By a long shot). Having access to a gun doesn’t mean you have to be criminal.

Allow your law abiding citizens to arm themselves and crime will fall. You make them easy targets. And no one is stopping you from going after the bad guys with guns. Get to it. You can take away all their guns.
