In clip played by MSNBC, a father tearfully recalled FaceTiming with his daughter while she was hiding just 90 feet away from the Odessa shooter, a man who killed seven people and injured dozens more.
MSNBC reporter Vaughn Hillyard talked on “Meet the Press” about interviewing numerous survivors of the Odessa shooting before introducing the clip of the father and his wife.
The father said his wife received numerous calls from a number they didn’t recognize. When they finally checked the area code, the father realized it was his daughter.
“We checked the area code and it was Odessa and I said ‘That’s Hayden’ and next thing you know my phone rings and Hayden is on the other line: ‘Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!’” the man recalled as he nearly broke down in tears.
Through the phone, the man recalled seeing the vehicle driven by the shooter, as well as a police vehicle. He also heard shots being fired.
“She is describing what was going as she was messing with the phone. And the next thing I know we’re looking at the mail truck [driven by the shooter] and the one police car and we’re hearing pop, pop, pop, pop and I’m telling Hayden ‘Be calm, be strong.’ She’s describing what’s happening and she’s scared,” he said. “Imagine what the parents are like on the other end of the phone watching FaceTime and it could be your daughter’s last time you see her alive.”
The man’s daughter survived the shooting and was unharmed.

The name of the Odessa shooter has been identified by police, though they have yet to come up with a motive. It is known, however, that the shooter was fired from his trucking job shortly before going into a rampage, and he had recently threatened a neighbor with violence.
“There are no definite answers as to motive or reasons at this point,” Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke said, “but we are fairly certain that the subject did act alone.”

The Odessa shooting began as a simple traffic stop, but quickly turned into a deadly shooting spree.
Though the specific motive for the shooter has not been revealed, President Donald Trump suggested Republicans and Democrats in Congress are currently working together to address mental health issues in the United States.
Asked if expanded background checks on firearms would help matters, Trump said no and kept the focus on dealing with mental health.
“We’re looking at a lot of different bills, ideas, concepts,” the president said. “It’s been going on for a long while, background checks. I will say that for the most part, sadly, if you look at the last four or five, going back even five or six or seven years, for the most part, as strong as you make your background checks, they would not have stopped any of it.”

“So it’s a big problem. It’s a mental problem,” he added. “It’s a big problem.”
