ABC, NBC accused of running cover for Biden’s botched war story

“Journalists” with ABC and NBC have been accused of reporting on former Vice President Joe Biden’s latest error in ways that seemed to be teeming with pro-Democrat, anti-Trump bias.

Take ABC News senior national correspondent Terry Moran, who some claim appeared to rush to former Vice President Joe Biden’s defense Thursday after the 2020 contender made up a war story.

“[A]lmost every detail in the story appears to be incorrect,” The Washington Post originally reported. “Based on interviews with more than a dozen U.S. troops, their commanders and Biden campaign officials, it appears as though the former vice president has jumbled elements of at least three actual events into one story of bravery, compassion and regret that never happened.”

Reporting Thursday evening on this error, Moran seemed to speak defensively of Biden, some allege.

“But the Vice President did pin a medal on a different man in a different part of Afghanistan for a different act of valor, Army Staff Sergeant Jeremiah Workman, who tried to rescue a fellow soldier from a burning vehicle,” he said.

“He’s in South Carolina campaigning, he told reporters there that, quote, ‘the central point of the story is, quote, absolutely accurate,’ that a young soldier did try to refuse a medal Biden was pinning on him,” Morgan added. “Biden trying to make the argument there that’s what counts, the heroism and heartbreak, not so much the details.”

But as noted by the Post, “almost none of the details he offered matched what actually happened to Workman.”

The Media Research Center’s NewsBusters division described Moran’s report as “sympathetic” to Biden. The watchdog group also took note of something said by NBC News White House correspondent Peter Alexander.

Reporting on the same story, Alexander seemed to focus more on President Donald Trump’s alleged “exaggerations and false statements” than on Biden’s proven lie.

“The President has made numerous exaggerations and false statements including this claim just this week,” he said, before playing a video of the president claiming that first lady Melania Trump “has gotten to know [North Korean dictator] Kim Jong-un.”

However, he neglected to mention that the White House has clarified the president’s remarks, with press secretary Stephanie Grisham explaining that Trump hadn’t meant the statement literally.

“President Trump confides in his wife on many issues including the detailed elements of his strong relationship with Chairman Kim — and while the First Lady hasn’t met him, the President feels like she’s gotten to know him too,” she said in a statement.

The NBC correspondent also neglected to mention the media’s history of misinterpreting the president’s remarks. Just last week they threw a fit after he sarcastically joked that he is “the chosen one” in regard to the ongoing trade war with China.

“As for Staff Sargent Workman, he told The Post 8 years later he still remembers meeting with Biden and felt like the former Vice President really understood,” Alexander concluded.

NewsBusters accused him of trying “to water down Biden’s conflated story” and argued that both he and Moran “would have been a lot more vindictive with how they covered it” had Trump been the one to tell a blatantly fake war story.

Below is a mashup of Alexander and Moran’s reporting:

According to NewsBusters, “CBS Evening News” outright skipped the Biden story and chose to instead bemoan “cities and states wanting to ban red-light and speed trap cameras.”

As for CNN, it went with Alexander’s angle, courtesy of April Ryan.

“Ryan appeared on CNN’s OutFront where she attempted to downplay the report by invoking President Donald Trump’s ‘climate of lies,'” the Washington Free Beacon reported.

“Host Jim Sciutto asked Ryan whether she believed the incorrect details in Biden’s story were ‘significant,’ prompting her to acknowledge they were. But she immediately shifted the conversation to Trump.”

“Jim, what you have to look at — we are in a climate of lies being thrown at us from the president of the United States, and we’re so hypersensitive about issues of lies,” she said.

People who are prone to gaffes, we are now holding them to the same standard, putting a bright spotlight on — looking at it as a lie, like this president tells, versus saying, ‘Oh, that’s Joe Biden. He’s prone to gaffing.’

Listen:

It was a stunning statement to make, given as it seemed to prove true the long-held conservative belief that the media treats Democrat politicians differently than it treats Republican politicians.
