‘Joke’ becomes operative word after Joe Walsh announces primary challenge to Trump

Former Illinois congressman turned anti-Trump zealot Joe Walsh has formally launched a primary challenge against President Donald Trump, not that any Republicans appear to care. In fact, most Republicans, including former Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, seem to view the “challenge” as a joke.

“Friends, I’m in,” Walsh tweeted Sunday morning at 9:04 am. “We can’t take four more years of Donald Trump. And that’s why I’m running for President. It won’t be easy, but bravery is never easy. But together, we can do it.”

Only moments after posting the tweet, he sat down with ABC News’ “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos to talk trash the president.

“They don’t have an alternative,” he said when asked by the host why polls have shown that the majority of the GOP base supports the president. “I’m running because he’s unfit, somebody needs to step up and there needs to be an alternative. The country is sick of this guy’s tantrum, he’s a child.”

“Again, the litany. He lies every time he opens his mouth. Look at what’s happened this week. The president of the United States is tweeting us into a recession,” he added.

In reality, there’s already been an alternative: former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who formally launched his primary challenge in April. Yet according to the latest polling data, he commands only 14 percent of the GOP vote, whereas the president commands 86 percent of it.

Moreover, the economy’s doing just fine …

It’s perhaps because of this striking contrast between the actual facts and Walsh’s argument that so many conservatives — both famous ones and random ones on social media — have responded to his primary “challenge” with a great deal of laughter, including Chaffetz.

That’s generous to say that it’s a challenge,” Chaffetz said Sunday morning on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” “I think it’s an absolutely joke.”

The former congressman added, “I know the other national media will run upon it. But if 435 of us in the House were voting for him, I don’t know that he’d even get a single vote. He was nice to meet, I was polite, I served with him … but that ain’t going anywhere fast. It’s just a joke.

He’s not alone in feeling this way.

“Clearly @walshfreedom is now doing comedy,” former Trump administration official Sebastian Gorka tweeted when Walsh first indicated earlier this week that he’s considering a primary challenge. “Utterly hilarious. Good Luck Joe defeating the man who beat Hillary. The FIRST time he ran for President. You are the Joke.”

“Oh…my…God lol! You sound like a Democrat on day one so you lost support immediately ? Change parties, your bias is showing moron,” a random Twitter user added in response to Walsh’s announcement on Sunday.

Look:

Even Ben Shapiro, a milquetoast Republican who was once a “Never Trumper,” has admitted that Trump has given the American people “some of the most conservative governance of my lifetime.”

But Walsh, who in 2011 was designated by the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) one of the “most corrupt members of Congress,” seems to disagree …

Suppose for one second though that Walsh somehow ekes out a primary victory over Trump and goes on to battle the Democrat Party nominee for the presidency. Would he even stand a chance in hell?

Well, take a look at the following extremely provocative tweets below and decide for yourself (*Extreme language warning) …
