Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper admitted he had a difficult time understanding how someone like the late Jeffrey Epstein could have been guilty of the crimes he was accused of.
In a bizarre statement given on Fox News’ “Cavuto Live,” Hickenlooper even called Epstein “handsome” and threw that out as a reason why he was shocked over the crimes.
“He was wealthy, he was powerful, he was handsome. How could he do the things he did and create this web of … terror for so many women?” he said.
When asked by Cavuto whether the high-profile people Epstein associated with could have known about his alleged crimes, Hickenlooper said it can be hard for high-profile people to separate themselves from those they associate with.
“Who you hang out with becomes part of that identity. Again, sometimes you do something with one person or another and they have — they get into trouble you couldn’t have anticipated. There’s nothing you can do about that,” he said.
Hickenlooper continued, “Most of us are careful to a certain extent and try to approach our lives — again, you can’t be perfect but you want to make sure you’re reflecting the best qualities of America.”
Hickenlooper also suggested that Epstein’s story shows that the laws America has in place do not guarantee justice.
“You don’t have to look very far to find places where those who are successful and wealthy and powerful — they get a better deal when they get in trouble than people that are working hourly jobs,” he said.
Facing charges of sex trafficking minors, Epstein was found dead in his cell at the Manhattan jail where he detained on Saturday morning. His reportedly committed suicide by hanging.

Epstein’s death follows the release of explosive documents related to his case. The documents revealed testimony accusing Democrats Bill Richardson and George Mitchell of having sex with a minor. The accuser claims Epstein kept her as a sex slave in the early 2000s and forced her to have sex with many high profile men. Richardson and Mitchell both denied accusations against them.
The documents also shed more light on Epstein’s relationship with Bill Clinton.
Though the two had been photographed together several times, President Donald Trump says he has not spoken to Epstein in years and even reportedly barred him from Mar-a-Lago after Epstein was accused of assaulting an underage girl.
“I don’t think I’ve spoken to him in 15 years. I was not a fan. I was not a fan of his. That I can tell you. I was not a fan,” the president told reporters this year following Epstein’s arrest.
Following Epstein’s death many have floated conspiracy theories and called for investigations.
“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough suggested Russians were behind Epstein’s death.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has called for an investigation.
Even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has publicly demanded “answers.”
