In closing for the Republican’s line of questioning, Representative Mike Johnson wanted to tie up some lose ends and remove all doubt from the hearing.
While questions of collusion, conspiracy, and obstruction were abundant, one larger, more intimidating question hung in the air like a potent rain cloud: Is it enough?
Is it enough to impeach? Is it enough to exonerate? Both sides pressed Mueller to fuel their narrative that the President is guilty/innocent, and it turned what would have otherwise been a relatively uneventful hearing into a political gladiatorial event. Viewers of all political stripes tuned in to catch the action because at the end of the day, we all had the same question.

Johnson did America a favor when it was his turn to question Director Mueller, summarizing over four hours of testimony and bringing it in for a landing.
Johnson: “Mr. Mueller, there’s one primary reason why you were called here today by the Democrat majority of our committee: Our colleagues on the other side of the aisle just want political cover. They desperately wanted you today to tell them they should impeach the president. But the one thing you have said very clearly today, is that your report is complete and thorough and you completely agree with and stand by its recommendations and all of its content. Is that right?”
Mueller: “True.”
Johnson: “Mr. Mueller one last important question: Your report does not recommend impeachment, does it?”
Mueller: “I’m not going to talk about recommendations.”
Johnson: “It does not conclude that impeachment would be appropriate here, right?”
Mueller: “I’m not going to talk about that issue.”
Johnson: “That’s one of the many things you wouldn’t talk about today, but I think we can all draw our own conclusions. I do thank you for your service to the country, and I’m glad this charade will come to an end soon and we can get back to the important business of this committee with its broad jurisdiction of so many important issues for the country.”
Hopefully this will put to bed all speculation on crimes committed by President Trump and his associates, but if history is anything to go by, Democrats will merely seize on Mueller’s refusal to comment on certain issues as a tacit confirmation of all of their worst fears.
While the hearing may have ended, this issue is far from concluded. “Collusion” may be out, but “obstruction” is going to undoubtedly be the Democrat flavor of the day until the 2020 election, and who knows where they’ll land on the topic of impeachment.
