Odd couple: Ted Cruz and AOC flirt with partnering up on some things

Is the Ted Cruz who stepped into office in 2013 with the backing of the Tea Party the same Sen. Ted Cruz who’s now making overtures to the Democrat Party by working with socialist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and providing supplies to illegal aliens?

For the most part, yes. After all, just this week the senator joined with fellow Sen. Bill Cassidy to unveil a landmark bill that condemns the left-wing extremist group Antifa and calls for it to be designated a domestic terrorist group.

But by the same token, Cruz is also a man who realizes that his home state of Texas isn’t quite as red as it used to be. Last year, he almost lost his seat to a radically far-left Democrat who eats dirt.

“[H]e understands, like we all understand, that Texas is changing,” Brendan Steinhauser, a Republican consultant who used to be active in the Tea Party, said to Fox News this week.

And so to appeal to Texas’s seemingly less-conservative constituents, Cruz has, it would appear, been trying to brush off his image — one crafted by the left-wing media — as a “right-wing bomb-thrower”  and highlight his ability to approach issues from a more moderate stance, while still remaining true to his conservative principles.

“The media caricature of me as a right-wing bomb-thrower has never been accurate,” he said in a phone interview with Fox. “I am conservative. I care deeply about conservative principles. I care deeply about the Constitution. And in each of these instances, I am working to advance policies that I have long defended, and long advocated for.”

And so when AOC posted a tweet in May expressing her belief that members of Congress should be banned from becoming corporate lobbyists after leaving office, Cruz said hey, that’s a good idea. The next thing the American people knew, the two had made a deal:

And when, only weeks later, Ocasio-Cortez argued that birth control should be available over-the-counter, Cruz again offered to team up with one of the most radical members of the Democrat Party:

To be clear, there’s nothing non-conservative about imposing lobbying limits on members of Congress and pushing to allow birth control to be obtained OTC. In fact, the latter proposal is highly conservative, in that it’d allow women to obtain birth control without government intervention.

What’s odd but not wrong is the Texas senator aligning himself with a radical Democrat. Like former Vice President Joe Biden had rightly noted — before he caved, that is — to get things done in life, sometimes you have to work with people you dislike. That’s life.

Cruz agrees.

“I’ve always been willing to work with anybody: Republican, Democratic, Independent, Libertarian. Heck, I’ve joked I’d work with Martians if we’re advancing good and positive policies,” he said to Fox.

In recent days, Cruz has also made efforts to help the illegals detained along the border. Earlier this month he penned a letter to the Department of Homeland Security asking that it institute a program that would allow Americans to directly donate supplies for illegal aliens.

“I understand that many of these organizations are currently having difficulties making donations because DHS and CBP currently lack procedures to accept their donations,” he wrote. “I thus urge you to establish and publicize a process for accepting donations from charitable organizations, faith-based organizations and NGOs to aid individuals in CBP custody.”

This too was a conservative move, though it may have appeared otherwise, given as conservatives, in general, aren’t too fond of illegal aliens and believe they should be deported.

But since the Trump administration has no other option but to detain illegals til their hearings occur, it must spend taxpayer funds taking care of these illegals. What Cruz’s proposal would allow is for Americans to voluntarily spend some of their own money taking care of these illegals. This is turn would reduce the amount of taxpayer funds the government would have to spend.

Don’t get it twisted, though. Just because the Texas senator has made overtures to the Democrat Party and tried to highlight his compassion and decency doesn’t mean he’s lost his bonafide conservative chops — or that he’s now unwilling to drop a hammer on AOC and her “squad” mates when necessary.

“[T]hese freshmen members of Congress are radical and extreme,” he bluntly said during an appearance this past Tuesday on Fox. “They are embracing full-on socialism. They are offering the so-called ‘Green New Deal,’ which would cost $93 trillion to the economy. That would have the effect of every family in American increasing your taxes 65,000 — $65,000 a year.”

When asked why the Democrat Party’s leadership won’t rein AOC and her “squad” mates in, he replied, “The conference is terrified of those freshmen. They’re terrified of the radical activists behind those freshmen, so they basically, the Speaker has handed her gavel over to those freshmen. The committee chairs have handed their gavels over to the freshmen. And every one of them are terrified that these freshmen will criticize them.”
