Faced with a soaring 4th of July speech on unity and freedom that avoided politics and self-promotion in favor of the greatness of America and honoring the US Armed Forces, President Trump’s critics found themselves in a pickle.
Other than Trump likely misreading the teleprompter once or twice on a rainy day, media critics, to include “conservative” Never Trump disciples like Sarah Elizabeth Cupp, who goes by the more trendy S.E. Cupp, were left with few options to offset what proved to be an inspirational message delivered in a statesmanlike manner.
With blinders to presidential history on, Cupp harrumphed that Trump “hijacked patriotism,” as she lamented that patriotism these days “feels synonymous” with the president — she is serving a CNN master and appealing to a CNN audience, after all.
“Here’s the deal, Trump has hijacked patriotism and I’m not here for it,” declared the host of “S.E. Cupp Unfiltered.”
Unable to dissect the president’s speech without looking petty, Cupp opted to ignore it and focus on past actions, with the prerequisite anti-Trump spin.
“When the president of the United States turns our democratic ideals on their head, ideals like a free press and free and fair elections, undermining them just to make himself look better, making us doubt our very best assets, he doesn’t want you to love America, he wants you to love him,” Cupp said.
“When the president of the United States demands abject, unwavering loyalty of members of Congress, people who pledged an oath to uphold the Constitution, not whatever he says, people who were elected to represent us, not him,” she continued. “When he weaponizes that loyalty, he’s saying above all else, even above America herself, you have to love me.”
It’s hard to imagine that Cupp actually watched Trump’s speech Thursday from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and came away with that take, or that she would find fault in any president expecting his own party to back his play.
“In Trump’s mind, he is America,” she seethed. “Patriotism means celebrating him.”
But with the president running on the very simple premise of making America great again, and then doing a masterful job of portraying that greatness on Independence Day, appealing to the pride of its citizens in a time when a political party runs on the principle of running down the United States, questioning when we were ever great, what’s a girl to do?
Except deny Trump the credit for his accomplishments.
“He can imagine he’s somehow responsible for our greatness,” Cupp carped. “He has nothing to do with making America great and he has nothing to do with why we’re the best damned country on the planet.”
