Trump makes announcement on upcoming ICE raids, praises ‘incredible’ border facilities

Questioned Friday about his handling of the ongoing illegal immigration crisis, President Donald Trump pushed back on the media’s portrayal of his administration’s actions as sinister and evil.

Well, I don’t call them ‘raids,’” he first said when asked by a reporter about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s plans to begin rounding up and deporting illegal aliens in about a week or so.

I say they came in illegally, and we’re bringing them out legally. These are people where we have the papers, we’ve gone through the court system. They’ll be starting fairly soon.”

He made the remarks on the South Lawn prior to reportedly boarding Air Force One en route to a golf course in Bedminister, New Jersey, for the weekend.

The remarks were made roughly a month after the president posted tweets announcing that ICE intended to “begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States.”

Democrat activists, including one Democrat presidential candidate, responded promptly by drawing a false equivalence between ICE rounding up and deporting illegal aliens and the Nazis rounding up and killing Jewish citizens.

Around late June, the president decided to delay the so-called “raids” for two weeks.

In his remarks Friday morning, the president also pushed back on the left’s relentless criticism of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s detention facilities and false portrayal of these facilities as so-called “concentration camps.”

“They do a great job,” he said. “They’re crowded because the Democrats will not give us any relief from these loopholes. We have loopholes that are so bad. We have asylum that’s so bad. So these places are — many of them; not all of them, but many of them — they’re incredible. They’re really well run.”

“I’ll tell you what, and I said it yesterday: Border Patrol did not train to be doctors and nurses and janitors. That’s not what they trained to be. They trained to be Border Patrol. And that’s what they’re doing, and they’re doing a phenomenal job.”

His point appeared to be that CBP is doing a “great jobgiven the circumstances, i.e., given a near-endless influx of illegal aliens streaming across the unsecured southern U.S. border.

This influx exists in part because of the incentivization of illegal immigration by Democrats, who, besides literally escorting illegal aliens across the border, have been offering illegals every freebie possible, from free healthcare to free legal advice.

A reporter responded by bringing up a recent Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General reporter that found that, not surprisingly, some of CBP’s facilities contain “dangerous overcrowding.”

Trump replied by pointing out that, so long as illegal aliens keep streaming across the border in an attempt to take advantage of America’s lax immigration laws, there’s not much he can do.

“I think they do great job with those facilities,” he said. “But do you know how it should be taken care of? Number one: Tell them not to come because it’s illegal.

“Very unfair to people that have been waiting in line for seven or eight years, and they’re about to be admitted, and they’ve studied and they know the country and the history and everything, and then a person comes in — walks in — and, all of a sudden, they’ve become a citizen or they’re allowed to stay.”

“So thousands and thousands of people will be legally removed from the country, and that process has started. And we’ve actually been doing that for a long time.”

His point appeared to be that the overcrowding in some of CBP’s facilities isn’t his administration’s fault, especially given the myriad of steps it’s attempted to take to both stop illegal aliens from crossing into the U.S. and disincentivize further illegal immigration. The problem is many of these steps have been blocked by congressional Democrats and activist judges.

What the president has been successful with is using the threat of tariffs to force Mexico to take steps of its own to stop illegal aliens from sidling across its borders into the U.S.

“The southern border is being policed very well by Mexico,” he said. “Mexico is doing far more than the Democrats — we all know it — because of tariffs, but they’ve been great. They’ve put 6,000 people. They have many of them there now on the southern border — their southern border.

“On our southern border, which is the main border that you think of, they’re going to have anywhere between 16,000 and 21,000 troops. It’s had a big effect. They’ve only been there for about a week, where they actually had the troops. But it’s had a tremendous effect, tremendous impact. And you’ll see the numbers starting to come in very well.”
