Impudent remarks about America’s Fourth of July celebrations made this week by Russia’s state-run media “journalists” ought to serve as a stark reminder of why, despite all the political trash-talking between Democrats and Republicans, both groups are ultimately on the same side.
During a segment Thursday on Russia 1’s “60 Minutes” program, the hosts “mocked the military equipment,” including tanks and other armored vehicles, that were being displayed at the president’s “Salute to America” parade, claiming they had “paint peeling off” and required “adhesive tape.” They also reportedly described the parade as “low energy” and “weak.”
Russia’s state TV is obsessively bashing Trump’s “low energy,” “weak” parade with “rusty tanks.” The hosts LOL at Trump’s claim about “revolutionary war airports” & other historical flubs. “There’s your city upon a hill, there’s your world leader—and Martians have been defeated.” pic.twitter.com/wiw2OcFCLN

“Footage of American tanks in Washington rolled across the studio’s screens as co-host Yevgeny Popov declared sarcastically, ‘The greatest parade of all times is going to be held today in Washington, that is what our Donald Trump has said. The American president announced he would show us the newest tanks,'” The Washington Post reported.
Popov continued by falsely claiming that the tanks were old, worn-out “Abrams and Sherman tanks, used during World War II and withdrawn from service in 1957.”
His colleague, co-host Olga Skabeyeva, added to the anti-American mockery by saying, “[T]he paint on these vehicles is peeling off. There are no cannons, and their optics have been glued on with adhesive tape.”
What’s notable is what inspired this derision: Liberal Democrats.
The Post noted that the president’s left-wing critics “have compared his planned July 4 celebration in the nation’s capital — which will feature tanks, flyovers by jets including Air Force One, as well as a pyrotechnics show — to something you might see in Russia, rather than the United States.”
This apparently irritated Popov and Skabeyeva, because they appear to believe America’s isn’t good enough to be compared to their beloved “Mother Russia.”
In a tweet posted earlier on Thursday, Skabayeva posted video footage of tanks arriving in Washington, D.C., and captioned it with the words “Putin’s America” and a laughing emoji:

Russians like Skabayeva seem to believe America’s military might is puny, for a lack of a better word.
“For Russians, who are accustomed to annual nationwide displays of military might, Trump’s event on Thursday isn’t impressive, according to Michael Kofman, an expert on Russia and the former Soviet Union at the Woodrow Wilson International Center,” the Post noted.
“From their perspective, what they’re going to see [in Washington] is a fairly neat, static military display rather than a parade approaching their scale, or even parades held in Europe,” Kofman said to the Post.
Russians reportedly hold a military parade annually on May 9, and their parades tend to be “grandiose” — much like the parades held by North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
What the Russians don’t seem to understand is that Trump’s parade wasn’t designed to show off and brag, but rather to celebrate America, its history and its democracy.
This is a point that Skabeyeva in particular is unable to comprehend.
“Americans are allowed to hold a parade because theirs is democratic, but we are not allowed because ours is chauvinistic,” she reportedly complained.
Well, the reason Russia gets so much flack for its parades is because they’re about dominance and power, not unity, patriotism and history.
“Americans always take care of each other. That love and unity held together the first pilgrims, it forged communities on the Great Plains, it inspired Clara Barton to found the Red Cross, and it keeps our nation thriving today,” the president said during his Fourth of July speech.
“Now we must go forward as a nation with that same unity of purpose. As long as we stay true to our cause, as long as we remember our great history, as long as we never ever stop fighting for a better future, then there will be nothing that America cannot do.”
Listen to his whole speech below:
Skabayeva reportedly scoffed at the alleged lack of might in the president’s parade, complaining that it was as if the conditions of the military equipment on display — equipment that she’d earlier complained had paint that was “peeling off” — were less important to Trump than the parade itself.
Well, yes, they were less important. And that’s because, contrary to fear-mongering complaints from the left, the president is not, has never been and will never be anything like Russian President Vladimir Putin, an egotistical maniac and ruthless thug with a history of mistreating his own people.
This is a point that it would behoove Democrat alarmists to keep in mind every time they think about delivering yet another screed about how Trump is a tyrant and blah, blah, blah.
No, he’s not. He’s a patriot, plain and simple.
“That same American spirit that emboldened our founders has kept us strong throughout our history,” he said in his speech Thursday. “To this day, that spirit runs through the veins of every American patriot. It lives on in each and every one of you here today.”
“It is the spirit of daring and defiance, excellence and adventure, courage and confidence, loyalty and love that built this country into the most exceptional nation in the history of the world, and our nation is stronger today than it ever was before.”
And that’s a spirit that Russians like Yevgeny Popov and Olga Skabeyeva know nothing about.
