Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has accused the U.S. Customs and Border Protection of having a “violent culture” following a report revealing graphic social media messages by alleged border patrol agents against the congresswoman.
The website ProPublica published a story on Monday with the headline “Inside the Secret Border Patrol Facebook Group Where Agents Joke About Migrant Deaths and Post Sexist Memes” and the piece revealed vulgar messages and art shared in a secret Facebook group that are aimed at both Ocasio-Cortez and detained migrants.
The group sports about 9500 members. ProPublica did not post names of agents, but claims that the group has current and former agents as members. The group is called “I’m 10-15,” which is code for “aliens in custody.”
“This just broke: a secret Facebook group of 9,500 CBP officers discussed making a GoFundMe for officers to harm myself & Rep. Escobar during our visit to CBP facilities & mocked migrant deaths,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote when sharing the ProPublica article on Twitter.
She added, “This isn’t about ‘a few bad eggs.’ This is a violent culture.”

In another tweet the congresswoman wrote, “9,500 CBP officers sharing memes about dead migrants and discussing violence and sexual misconduct towards members of Congress. The Monday visit by a group of Democrats that Ocasio-Cortez mentions in her tweet is also mentioned in some of the posts shared by ProPublica. One post encouraged an officer to throw a “burrito at these b*tches.”
Another post included a fake illustration of Ocasio-Cortez engaging in a sexual act with President Donald Trump.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection has released a public statement condemning the posts and promising that any agents involved will be “held accountable.”
“These posts are completely inappropriate and contrary to the honor and integrity I see—and expect—from our agents day in and day out,” U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost told Fox News. “Any employees found to have violated our standards of conduct will be held accountable.”
An investigation into the matter kicked off on Monday.
“Today, U.S. Customs and Border Protection was made aware of disturbing social media activity hosted on a private Facebook group that may include a number of CBP employees,” Matthew Klein, the assistant commissioner of the CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility, said in a public statement. “CBP immediately informed DHS Office of the Inspector General and initiated an investigation.”
Ocasio-Cortez claimed that while visiting CBP stations on Monday, agents were laughing at her.
She tweeted, “Now I’ve seen the inside of these facilities. It’s not just the kids. It’s everyone. People drinking out of toilets, officers laughing in front of members Congress. I brought it up to their superiors. They said ‘officers are under stress & act out sometimes.’ No accountability.”
